Traffic Death Toll Runs Heavy Across Holidays
Traffic deaths surged during Christmas Eve and Day with 316 fatalities reported. The National Safety Council noted 40 deaths from midnight Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday nationwide, followed by high totals elsewhere, while 35,170 lives were lost from traffic accidents in the first ten months of the year. The AP tally for Dec 10 and 11 showed 170 deaths over two days, an average of 85 per day. The council had projected 200 to 250 deaths during the holiday period and warned New Year tolls could reach 140 to 180.

Prison Employee Waives Hearing On Drug Charge
Frank C. Burgess 54, an infirmary worker at the state prison for men, waived a preliminary hearing on illegal possession of amphetamine and was bound over to the February term of Circuit Court. Bond set at 2000. Burgess arrested after a prison tour ending at 7 30 am Wednesday. he lives at 512 E Capitol Ave. An inmate was also caught with amphetamine. another prison worker Ronnie Baum pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 120 days after admitting taking $100 to smuggle the drug. Possession became a felony effective Oct 13 1963. The investigation linked to contraband at the prison continues.
