After a joint city and state emergency water conference, officials warn New York may endure years of recurring shortages. Gov. Thomas Dewey says tapping the Hudson River could yield 100 million gallons daily in about seven months, but no long term solution is guaranteed.
Edgar Sandfort a 58 year old Missouri Pacific railroad engineer died at St Marys hospital after a heart attack on the road. Born July 27 1881 in Miter county he moved here 40 years ago and married Bertha Pruitt in 1913. He leaves two children three sisters a grandchild and several lodges and unions memberships. The family home is 1718 West Main Street.
Red China Radio quotes Mrs. Robeson, wife of Paul Robeson, denouncing U.S. government as controlled by 60 families and praising Communists. She cites civil rights denial and threats to Black citizens, Jews, foreigners, and progressives, urging solidarity with Communist allies.
Budapest reports the arrest of Israel Jacobson, an American Jewish relief worker and director of the American Joint Distribution Committee in Hungary. He was detained on suspicion of spying after returning from a U S leave. In Livingston County, Rex Donovan was named judge of the eastern division by Gov. Washington December 28 AP diplomacy is a cold brutal business. The United States withholds recognition for now and may delay for months as arguments intensify over recognizing the new Communist government in China. The nationalists under Chiang Kai-shek are sidelined on Formosa while the world weighs if recognition equals approval. Three conditions outlined by Secretary Acheson will guide any move: control of territory, public support, and intent to honor international commitments. Recognition could alter diplomatic leverage and possibly ease future U.S. access or influence in Asia, but the core question remains what concrete benefit the United States would gain.

In Miami on December 23 AP reports record Spanish mackerel catches, the best since 1941, unloaded locally. The day's haul valued at about 32000 dollars, with storage space full at one major fishery and overflow iced or parked aboard returning boats. An official said the mackerel mean a merry Christmas to the fishermen.
The West Berlin city council passed a resolution accusing Russia of detaining over a million German war prisoners, including women and children, in substandard Soviet zones despite promises to release them. The report notes conditions described as sub-human and references repeated Soviet assurances.
