U.S. stocks fell Monday as tax loss selling offset gains from earlier sessions. Dow Jones slipped 3.89 points to 785.97, NYSE composite down, American, and other averages lower amid lighter volume. Analysts note tax law changes could extend selling through year end.

A total of 52 men were released Monday under the Christmas commutation procedure. The exodus did not depopulate the prison as 63 inmates had been released or admitted since last Thursday, including 42 arrivals from St. Louis.
An aide in Mayor Addonizio’s office Herminio Nieves and court interpreter Andre Soto were indicted by an Essex County grand jury on charges of extorting persons connected with criminal cases. Nieves helped channel Puerto Rican opinions and grievances. The post pays $6 500 per year.
