The CDC reported influenza like illness spread across the East South and Midwest with thousands seeking care in Mobile County Alabama and similar cases in four other Alabama counties. In Michigan the virus was isolated in Detroit and Ann Arbor as schools reduced attendance.
Harris, 45, St. Louis County coroner, filed for the Democratic nomination in Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District seat being vacated by Rep. Curtis. The report notes Curtis seeks the GOP nomination for U S Senator and mentions recent outbreak concerns in schools. Harris has served as coroner since 1956 and lives in Olivette.
All Missouri local government units were invited to join the new local government retirement system at a board meeting Thursday. The 1967 law allows cities under 30,000 counties and other units to provide retirement benefits for their employees. John H. Poelker of St. Louis was elected chairman, Maurice L. Hixon of Sikeston vice chairman, and Ronald W. Beatty named acting executive secretary with offices in Jefferson City.
A study shows Lincoln University now relies heavily on commuter students from Cole County and surrounding counties, with 50 percent from Cole and nearby counties. Missouri November nonfarm employment rose to 1,594,400 from October’s 1,389,200, with 62,500 unemployed, about 3.2 percent of the workforce.

Jefferson City police captured a motorist Thursday night suspected in two hit and run crashes. The incidents occurred at Madison and Miller Streets and at Ohio Street and St. Mary’s, with officers tracing the vehicle to the suspect.
