Pittsburgh December 22 AP The year 1949 looks to be the safest in coal mining history with a forecast of few major disasters. Spokesmen credit safety education equipment checks and careful procedures, noting the last major disaster was November 4, 1948, and mines will operate four days during the holiday weeks.
Governor Forrest Smith agreed to fulfill a Christmas request from a disabled Nevada girl named Gladys. He arranged with Ben F. Weir of the Nevada Daily Mail to ensure the child receives a Persian kitten and nuts for her tree. The envelope to Forrest Smith was addressed to St. Louis, Missouri.
Washington December 22 AP report says a new clash between Senate and House over Air Force size is likely as Congress opens. House bill sets 70-group force. Senate critics want the reference to be omitted and argue existing authorization already covers air power needs. The rift could force ongoing amendments and a House Senate conference to resolve the conflict.
Carthage Missouri December 22 AP report says J Dale Hunt charged with attempted burglary won a transfer to another circuit court division for a habeas corpus hearing. His filing claims his life and health were endangered by being confined in the same cell block with a tubercular prisoner.
Herman F. Wintermeyer 67 longtime Hartsburg area farmer died at home from a heart attack while decorating for Christmas. Born October 24 1882 in Germany he moved to the United States as a boy and settled in Hartsburg. He married Emma Shormann and is survived by relatives. Funeral arrangements were to be announced by the Rev Herbert etc.
Washington reports the army will halt drill pay for 57,708 officers and 20,759 enlisted reservists in 2,865 training units for at least six months. Reservists may drill without pay, while Congress previously provided funds and authorization for drill pay.

James W. Carmichael juvenile placement supervisor for the state training schools resigned. W. E. Sears director of training schools said Carmichael will join Milton Weiffenbach U S probation chief in St Louis. Carmichael had been on the training school staff since August 1947 and helped develop a new placement program for juveniles.
