Himer Reed at Toastmasters Monday night praised Christmas music for uniting people and spreading goodwill. He traced carol history from the Reformation through Luther to the 1739 writings of Moehr and Grueber, noting Silent Night as the greatest among such songs.
A church program began with a Tyrolese song later renamed and published in 1842 after a repairman heard it on the organ. Emperor Frederick William IV promoted it in 1854 for religious Christmas gatherings. Toastmaster Reed led a German rendition during a masterful address. Other speakers included James Kolb and William H. Tellman. The club’s next meeting is January 5.
About 60 pupils from Moreau Heights grade school first and second grades staged a Christmas program for the Lions Club. They sang carols, a rhythm band performed, and two Santa skits were presented. Jack Nester of Sears, Roebuck contributed toys for Salvation Army safety drive. each member donated a toy or cash.
Pearl Waite commander of the eighth Missouri district American Legion and Mrs. B. F. Houser district auxiliary president spoke at the Tony Jenkins Post Christ party Tuesday night at the Community Center. More than 50 Legion and Auxiliary members attended the event with gifts exchanged. Mrs. Ruth Johnson chaired with an auxiliary committee handling the refreshments.
Heavy snow in the eastern states slows Missouri Pacific mail trains to the city. Incoming mail is delayed or held up until rail bottlenecks clear, with parcel post and mail deliveries expected to rise in the next few days.

Dorr, president pro tem of the City Council, defends a 1,500 higher cost International pumper for the fire department, arguing its 148 hp at 2,200 rpm and 450 cubic inch displacement yield greater power and durability than the Ford’s 145 hp at 3,600 rpm and 337 cubic inches. He notes torque differences and overall engine design as reasons for the choice amid criticism by Mayor James T. Blair Jr.
Ford motor at 1800 rpm delivers 225 pound torque while the International runs at 1200 rpm to about 360 pound torque. The power gap is clear, with an ordinance needed to authorize purchasing the International truck for 10 748 dollars. Mayor Blair was absent from the city yesterday and a special council meeting may be called before month’s end.
The Cass county sheriff served an appearance summons at Harrisonville on Granville Abbott in a divorce petition filed by his wife Mrs Jane Abbott. The couple married July 27 1948 in Kansas City Missouri and separated January 17 1947. They previously married in Tennessee in November 1945. They have a five year old child Connie. Bennett Construction Company of Kansas City won the contract to build a 120 bed dormitory at the State School for Feeble Minded in Marshall. The low bid was $416,782. Five bids for a tuberculosis building at the school were rejected as too high as the project proceeded. Samuel Marsh, director of the Department of Public Health and Welfare, commented on the process.
John F. Powell, state building director, said four dormitory bids were tightly grouped. The lowest bid was 68000 more than the General Assembly appropriation, but Powell remained optimistic about the building program and contractor interest in state construction jobs.
