The body of 21 year old John Austin Burnham of Orrick Missouri was recovered from the Missouri River about a half mile from where he fell from a boat on December 8. He was found by O C Hewlett and local residents had continued searching.
Circuit Court Judge Sam C Blair presided over seven habeas corpus pleas. Five convicts were remanded to prison for further evidence or continued under advisement. Names include Nathaniel Dixon William Wesley Wren Eugene Lease George Martin and Harold Swanson. Swanson and Martin carry robberies sentences. Dixon serves life for rape. James case and Blanken ship case were held for more evidence.
Retiring Gov Phil Donnelly and Gov Elect Forrest Smith each got a 32 pound live turkey from the Missouri Poultry Council for Christmas dinners. Donnelly’s bird was raised by R M Calvert at Springfield Hatchery and VP of the National Turkey Federation. Smith’s turkey came from Gene Waite, Eldon hatcheryman and Missouri Turkey Federation president. Both birds were broad breasted bronze. The council announced Missouri raisers produced 1,310,000 turkeys this year valued at 12 million dollars, ranking sixth in the nation.

The United States ordered Japan to implement a new economic program to speed recovery and curb inflation. General MacArthur was instructed to direct measures on taxes wages prices rationing and foreign trade to stabilize the economy and raise exports. The plan seeks a true budget balance and a future single exchange rate as the Far Eastern Commission pressed similar reforms earlier.
Aides say Senator Murray will reintroduce a Missouri Valley Authority bill in the next session. The plan mirrors the Tennessee Valley Authority, authorizing flood control, reclamation, navigation, irrigation, power development and recreation across the valley. Two divorces were granted in Circuit Court by Judge Sam C. Blair. Bernard F. Myers and Mrs. Thena Grace Shinn filed for divorce. Myers' case was granted due to default by Mrs. Emma Vera Myers. The Shinn divorce included a property settlement. Le Roy Shinn defaulted. The couples married in 1946 and 1926 respectively and separated in 1948 and September of this year.
St Louis dispatch reports Southwestern Bell Telephone Co and the workers union failed to agree on arbitration. Union VP Lonergan warned a strike before Christmas if no pattern is adopted. Union rejects governors’ board. company cites political appointments and favors a binding panel. A three-man plan was proposed but deemed unwieldy by the company.
Raleigh A. Ward of the Missouri Conservation Commission information section has resigned for health reasons after serving since May 1 as assistant editor of Missouri Conservationist and handling news releases. He has retired to a small farm near Ava to pursue freelance writing, with over 20 years in journalism. His successor was not named.
A group of stockmen formed the Cole County Beef Breeders Association at their meeting in the offices of the Production Credit Association. Elected were A. H. Diemler Jefferson City president L. A. D. Leslie Russellville vice president and Ivo J. Frank route 3 secretary treasurer. They drafted beef breed classifications for the Junior Chamber of Commerce to use at the Agriculture Show next August. The goal is the general improvement of beef quality in Cole County.
The fall meeting of the Mid Continent Council of Development Agencies concluded with a business session electing officers. James W. Clark was re elected president, HY Ao Mobtor named vice president, and R. E. Grose secretary. Next meet in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with a May spring session possible. George C. Smith urged planners to elevate industry in community plans, stressing public service and best site location for new industry.
Paris report says Israel failed to win Security Council approval for UN membership with five yes votes and Syria against. Britain France China Canada and Belgium abstained or did not vote, leaving seven needed. Aubrey Eban vowed to refile, Israel remains on waiting list with 13 others until General Assembly reconvenes April 11 1949. A separate item notes Kenneth Brumley 24 jailed for careless and reckless driving after being stopped on highway 304 at Brazito.
The Agriculture Department's final report for 1948 shows a record harvest with the aggregate volume of all crops the largest ever harvested, up about 8.7 percent from 1947 and 37 percent above the 1923-32 base. Grain supplies reached record levels, aiding domestic needs and exports. Wheat topped only by last year, while crops like flaxseed soybeans peanuts and cranberries set records. An unprecedented 179 million tons of grains were harvested, about 40 million more than last year.
Moscow Idaho reports a pheasant crash lands inside Mrs. W. M. Tinniswood’s front room after a window shatters in near zero temperatures. Believing the bird dead, she alerts the landlady. upon return, a second window shatters as the bird escapes through the same route. Repairs begin as cold air chills the home.
The House Committee on Un-American Activities released seven more Whittaker Chambers documents, including a strictly confidential note to Secretary Hull dated February 16 1938. The note from Herschel V Johnson London chargé d affaires discussed British warship plans and was part of a batch the committee says were smuggled from State Department sources for relay to Russia. Committee notes no evidence Chambers transmitted the files. Alger Hiss is indicted on perjury counts. he denies involvement.
Moberly Missouri December 17 AP two State Highway Patrol officers say a truck driver who forced their car off the highway paid 330 dollars in fines after speeding 70 mph on US 63 north of here and through Jacksonville. He pleaded guilty to excessive speed while intoxicated passing a vehicle on a hill and failing to drive on the right.
A B-25 bomber from Biggs Air Force Base exploded near Robeline about 75 miles southeast of Shreveport, killing seven aboard. The craft carried five airmen and two Navy enlisted personnel. Names to be released after next of kin are notified.
Chinese defense lines north of Nanking pulled back to 30 miles from the capital as the 76 mile retreat from Pengpu to Chuhsien signaled a deteriorating government position. Fresh 20th Army troops arrived to relieve the Sixth Army Group and aid the trapped 12th Army Group, with reports of frequent artillery fire around Peiping and panicked Pengpu residents boarding southbound trains.
Li Chi-Shen, exiled by Chiang Kai-Shek, says a Nanking emissary sought his help to replace Chiang as president. He suggested the chief in Nanking could retain Nationalist troops in occupied areas if no destruction or sabotage occurred and all government workers stayed. Li also said he could work with the Communists in a coalition.
Nine air force crew stranded on the Greenland ice cap after a glider, aided by a C-54 from Goose Bay, failed to take off twice as snow trapped its wheels. No injuries reported. A plywood runway or belly-sliding approach may be tried next. The glider was dropped on the ice earlier today.
