The Van Meulz, once with 1600 passengers, was defended by seven armed guards as 25 pirates looted the ship, taking six passengers for ransom to a Bias Bay hideaway. The Van Houtz returned to port. A German V-2 rocket reportedly traveled over 3600 miles per hour.
Southwestern Bell engineer G J Vande Steeg testified before the Missouri Public Service Commission that mobile radio telephone service will reach U S 67 between St Louis and Texarkana in 1948 and potentially on U S 50 or U S 40 between Kansas City and St Louis. Stations will be land-purchased as needed, with FM permits sought. The system, first tested in 1946, relies on closely spaced receivers and terrain, while power-line telephone links are being explored around Hannibal.
Vande Steeg testified before the Public Service Commission on a plan to install dial systems in 19 Missouri communities including Mexico, Joplin, Springfield, Kansas City area, and Kirkwood. The utility seeks about a 10 percent rate increase to support a $67 million two year program to extend service, with witnesses noting prior year expenditures and a rising net return from 3.69 to about 5.04 percent as opponents in around 20 cities challenge the proposal.
Capital Toastmasters debated whether the Christmas season is overly commercialized at a Monday meeting in Colonde Tea Room. Participants argued profit focus from department stores versus Christmas spirit found in giving, with calls to aid the needy and see prosperity through buying restraint.
Two marriage license applications were filed Tuesday with the county recorder's office. The filers are Mendel R. Cline and Louise Bolton, and LeRoy Smith Jr. and Virginia Smith, all in this city.
Five young men captured in Kansas City were ordered sent to Indiana custody. Charles Floyd Davis 19 James Emery Mosby 22 Floyd Alvey Jr 21 Glenward Marvin Alvey 22 and Herbert Winchell 21 all from Tell City Indiana face burglary charges in Jasper Indiana. C L Abbott Jr son of C L Abbott Sr of Kansas City played in a band concert for the victory train.
Robert Melcher 46 a farmer in Elston died suddenly after a heart attack while unloading corn. Born August 2 1901 in Cole county he lived there all his life. He married Florence Lister in Jefferson City April 1 1931 and had three children with one son dying in infancy. Survived by parents a stepmother widow two daughters two brothers and three sisters. Funeral arrangements pending word from a California brother.
Clarence Reece Pulley aged 57 died of a heart attack at his home five miles north of Tipton Saturday night December 13. Final rites were held Monday at 2 PM with Rev. George W. Gray officiating. Mrs S R Ferguson provided solo with Caroline Wray at the piano. Interment was in the Masonic cemetery with pallbearers Willard Ernie and Herbert.
Mr. Pulley, born July 25 1890 in Cooper county Missouri, was married to Ella Moore on December 28 1927 and had a son Joseph. He served in World War I and is survived by his wife, a son, two nephews and a niece, with siblings Joseph and Estell Pulley deceased.
In Tokyo on December 16, General MacArthur polled more votes than Emperor Hirohito and the Japanese Communist in a high school student poll on whom they respected most. The event reflects postwar sentiment and public perception of leadership figures during occupied Japan.
