AFB backs flexible price supports and soil bank plan

The American Farm Bureau Federation endorsed flexible government price supports despite southern cotton growers’ push for 90 percent parity. Delegates approved a soil bank to convert land to grasses and legumes to cut current and future surpluses. Georgia Farm Bureau president H. L. Wingate led the resisted fight for 90 percent parity, claiming many producers favor it though he faces potential withdrawal from the federation. Wingate said he would seek congressional support for cotton farmers, and noted 39 of 163 delegates backed him. Delegates from multiple states supported his stance, and Wingate predicted most basic crop producers favor 90 percent parity.

Soviet Leaders See Cool Afghan Welcome on Asia Tour

Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin and Communist Party Chief Nikita Khrushchev arrived in Kabul for the last stop of their Asian tour to a subdued reception. Afghan Premier Mohammed Daud and a guard of honor greeted them as flags appeared late and officials sought to avoid signaling a Soviet satellite relationship. Bulganin underscored that Afghanistan pursues neutrality and peace while expanding Afghan-Soviet ties. Observers say the restrained welcome reflected a desire to avoid pro-Russian sentiment, with occasional anti-Soviet graffiti noted. King Mohammed Zahir Shah planned a dinner, and Daud would host a banquet the next day.
