Police report two floor mats and several milk bottles stolen from the first floor hall of Wymore Apartments at 319 Washington Street during Monday night. No value listed. Witnesses noted several boys seen playing near the area earlier in the evening.
Members of Prince of Peace Commandery No. 29 Knights Templar will hold a Christmas dinner next Saturday at 6 30 p m in the Masonic Temple. All Sir Knights and their ladies invited. Col Robert W Hedrick grand commander Missouri to speak. Sir Knight B B Schmidtke toastmaster. Music directed by Sir John Rich. Dinner served by Jefferson Chapter Order Eastern Star. Robert St George chairs planning committee.
Jefferson City’s City Collector John B. Sturm correctly forecast 303 electoral votes for Truman before the 1948 election. Although several Southern states and four north of the Mason Dixon line tipped to Thurmond, Truman finished with 304. Sturm’s 1944 forecast for Roosevelt, 419, missed by 12.
Difficulty obtaining steel for 1949 state automobile license tags has delayed about two thirds of the 900000 plates due January 1. All plates will not be ready until April 1, keeping 1948 licenses valid until then. New tags for January through April buyers under the new system may be purchased January 1.
Volunteers enlisting in the United States army or air force on or after December 22 and before Christmas will receive a 10 day delay en route. Capt. William F. Conlon, commanding officer of the Jefferson City recruiting office, announced the policy to keep men near home during the holidays. Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, national Selective Service director, spoke on the policy last week.
Brief notes indicate reductions of draftees would be held up until after Christmas with similar postponements seen shortly before Thanksgiving, signaling a nationwide delay in inductions.
