Deputy Acquitted In Fatal Shooting Of College Student
In Williamston North Carolina an all white jury acquitted Dallas Holliday a 37 year old deputy sheriff of second degree murder in the fatal shooting of Joseph Cross a 21 year old Negro college student at A T College Greensboro Cross was shot near Jamesville after a telephoned date trap for a white woman Polly Roberson 25 a waitress had alleged being propositioned by a caller. Sheriff R W Rawls testified the shooting followed a struggle with Holliday as the deputy watched from Robersons car. Four shots were fired and Cross died en route to a hospital.
