Dr Juan A Del Regato of Columbia Missouri told the Radiological Society that X rays can cure eyelid cancer almost completely. He cited 117 reported cases all controlled by X rays, with surgery aiding in some instances. He noted more women than men are affected.
Legal barrier to establishing a state vocational school at Camp Crowder was cleared by Attorney General J E Taylor. He ruled a War Assets Administration deed would give the University of Missouri clear title, contingent on board acceptance before Jan 1. The university seeks 1 750 000 for 1949 to start, with 950 000 from general revenue and 800 000 from postwar reserve, for 25 years of operation.
The 45 staff members of the J C Penney Company store here will join 50 000 Penney Associates nationwide to receive a special payment equal to two weeks pay. Manager Ralph Hicks announced it as recognition of existing conditions, not a Christmas bonus. All full time associates employed for all of 1948 participate, with part time and extra employees included on a proportionate basis.
Dr Hugh G Dallas 66 of 1925 West Main died at St Marys hospital after a three weeks illness of heart disease. A Jefferson City physician since 1908 he served as medical director of Central Missouri Life Insurance for 12 years and was city physician for 16 years. He was also a railroad doctor for the Missouri Pacific. Born in Linn in 1882 he married Gertrude Wester Tan in 1907 and survived by his wife three sons a daughter a brother six grandchildren and a host of civic ties.
Stephen Henry Michelis died at birth Tuesday night at the family home in Cedar City. He was survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Henry Michelis and three sisters Orna Elizabeth Noma and Arvella. A J Halleman 48 of 711 Walsh died unexpectedly yesterday afternoon after collapsing on Clark Avenue while walking home from Inter national Shoe Factory where he had worked 12 years. He was pronounced dead at St Marys hospital likely from a heart attack. Witness Guy Nichols saw him fall. Born June 20 1900 in New Haven he moved to Jefferson City in 1921 and married Minnie Gordon in 1939 who survives with two stepsons and four siblings. He was a member of Immaculate Conception church and the Married Mens Sodalit y.
In Forest City Missouri 18 year old David Hill was formally charged with first degree murder for the slaying of 75 year old widow Mrs J M Bennett. Prosecutor Jack R Eiser said Hill admitted burning a jacket in a stove at his converted garage home and three witnesses saw the jacket while one saw it burned. Officers found a lodge key in ashes matching a lock at Bennett home.
Jefferson City police officer Alex Riner received a surprise letter Tuesday from President Truman, thanking him for ongoing interest and wishing health and happiness. The White House envelope was opened by Mrs. Riner, with the family surprised by the personal touch. Riner has long supported Truman, noted for loyalty on his High street beat.
The Exchange National Bank will hold its annual Christmas party on December 18 from 3 to 5 PM in Jefferson City. All local children are invited to meet Santa Claus and receive a candy gift from beneath the bank's large Christmas tree. The bank notes the event has drawn thousands in past years and may recognize children who attended the first party decades ago.
Tom Johnson was elected president of the Capital Shrine Club at a Tuesday night meeting at the American Legion hall. Officers named include William Edwards first vice president Edward Caine second vice president T C Mitchell Jr secretary Dale Turner treasurer and Bert Wageher Fitton and Ernest Kallenbach elected to the board of trustees.
Construction superintendent William Walch reported vandalism at Memorial Park pool site where vandals broke window lights on two tool houses. Tools inside were undisturbed. Police were notified of the damage from last night.
