Washington AP Dec 7 grocers 560000 stores petition the government for higher ceiling prices citing increased operating costs. OPS plans a comprehensive survey early next year to assess earnings and whether current ceilings need adjustment valuing a possible 1/2 to 1 percent rise in national food prices.
Hartsburg American Legion and veterans joined with non veterans to raise funds for the Cole County service officer. Drive Chairman Gray Burmeister reported the effort had reached about one third of its goal with only about 20 percent of potential supporters contacted. The drive was not a challenge to the Community Chest decision, which will resume next year with veterans returning to the Chest.
The Federal Bureau of Internal Revenue filed a $49,364 lien in federal court against Larry Knohl of Long Beach New York and his wife Rea Knohl over his 1950 income tax. Knohl testified he bought an airplane for $30,000 from a friend of T Lamar Caudle and that Caudle received a $5,000 commission. Caudle resigned at President Truman's request. He denied gambling but agreed he might have earned $25,000 from gambling last year.
Vice President Alben W. Barkley spoke at memorial services on Pearl Harbor’s tenth anniversary warning against rising totalitarian ideology and noting the shift in allies. Oscar L. Chapman called Pearl Harbor a symbol of our un readiness as ceremonies unfolded at Punchbowl and in Honolulu with prayers, wreaths, and taps.
A local physician Dr. Joseph S Summers Jr is named defendant in two circuit court suits seeking 125000 in damages filed yesterday by Susan Gay Boone a five year old girl and her parents. The petitions claim negligence and unskillfulness during treatment of a scalp infection two years ago causing severe burns and permanent hair loss and alleging future medical costs and possible fatal outcomes.
Walter E. Rice an escaped inmate received a two year prison term after pleading guilty to escape charges. Walter B. Kempker a Capital City youth pleaded guilty to driving without permission and was placed on probation with a veterans hospital treatment condition.
Mrs Blair Moody wife of Michigan Senator Blair Moody displays the coat sales slip pinned under her corsage. The records show the coat cost 381.21 dollars including tax and was paid for before her husband became a senator. The coat is not a gift and is a marmink dyed Italian lamb not mink.
Harmon Nebel heads the Jefferson City Ob Club with 60 attendees at the Masonic hall as Darold W. Jenkins joins as vice president. Elliott Farmer named state board representative. John Hendren to state directors. High Simmons presented Kansas Missouri game film.
The weatherman forecast rain changing to snow for the Central Missouri area this afternoon. Occasional rain or snow are in the forecast tonight as cooler temperatures set in after a high around 35 to 40 degrees. The temperature fell to about 37 degrees at midnight following a daytime high near 55.
A 3,300 mile color telecast of Dr. John C. Jones repairing 20 year old Richard C. Russell’s aorta from Pacoima, California to New York and Chicago drew praise from doctors nationwide. The operation, first of its kind on color TV, showcased new medical education potential and the AMA president called it a milestone for remote consultation.
Charles Vache of 200 Brook Street was jailed after a collision at Walnut and McCarty with Richard K. McMurry of 709 Houchen Police. Police report Vache struck the rear of McMurry’s car and then tried to strike him. Vache was summoned for driving while drinking and ordered to appear in police court. Damages were estimated at 100 dollars for Vache’s car and 60 dollars for McMurry’s.

Washington observes Pearl Harbor anniversary with a paper battle simulating an air raid. The mock attack damages the Capitol offices and Union Station while radio curbs prevent warning leaks. One thousand five hundred simulated enemy troops are described as having parachuted into the city.

Lee L. Mitchell administrator of the Jefferson City estate filed motions to kill three Texas suits totaling 63789.31 filed November 14 after a July 8 automobile crash near Miami Oklahoma that killed Benjamin and Ida Mitchell. He admitted the accident but denied claims the Mitchell car caused it. Plaintiffs Harold Bristol Zona Ruth Bristol and C P Warman live in Wichita Falls Texas.
Governor Forrest Smith signed a bill increasing state aid for school buildings in reorganized districts from 25000 to 50000 dollars. The state remains limited to paying half the construction cost. He also signed a measure to allow Kansas City voters to rejoin the registration list after moving within the city.
Twenty two Missouri Republican leaders met in Kansas City to form a state wide group backing General Eisenhower. They adopted principles endorsing the Kansan for the presidency and planned a permanent organization with a headquarters. Manuel H. Davis of Kansas City served as temporary chairman and Mrs L Davis of Boonville as temporary secretary.
A B29 with 16 aboard and a C 47 with 10 disappeared or crashed on overseas missions. The B29 wreckage and one body were found near the Azores after a night crash en route to Bermuda and MacDill Field. The C 47 vanished after radioing a landing near Marignane France with 10 aboard. French and American forces searched the Riviera and coastal mountains as winter seas hampered rescue efforts.
A reinforced Communist unit attacked an allied hill position on the central front near Kumsong. The three and a half hour fight ended with Reds repulsed. Allied air forces bombed a Red airfield and a key railway bridge. Snow and rain limited ground action as the 11 day jet battles concluded.
State and district officers of the Missouri Dental association hold their annual conference at the Governor hotel starting with a talk by Guest Speaker James B. Robinson of Los Angeles at 10 a.m. He will discuss Dental Economics at 2 p.m. A luncheon follows for state officers, presidents, and council members from all eight sections. State President A. Frank Schopper of Kansas City presides, assisted by Secretary Treasurer Reuben R. Rhoads and Assistant Secretary Treasurer Betty Satterfield.

Washington reports that Charles Oliphant former chief counsel of the Internal Revenue Service showed unusual interest in a tax fraud case against Abraham Teitelbaum a Chicago lawyer and real estate operator. McLean testified Oliphant helped delay another evasion case linked to Washington firms and urged actions influenced by Rep James Morrison.
The Washington Post reports President Truman is considering a major government house cleaning before year’s end. He has not fixed a plan but weighs actions including J. Edgar Hoover heading an investigations team and appointing bipartisan lawyers to prosecute officials charged with corruption.
Delbert Van Meter an 18 year old inmate serving four years for burglary slipped past backstage guards at a school gym during a prisoner produced show for high school students then disappeared wearing a blue gooseneck sweater and blue slacks. The drama titled Trapped told a submarine service story.
Lightning hit two of four hydrogen balloons over the Panmunjom armistice conference site during a severe storm. The inflamed balloons fell with no injuries reported. It was the fourth mishap since the balloons were launched to warn aircraft from the neutral zone in October. Two new balloons were raised over Panmunjom today.
A 32 year old woman Miss Beatrice Taplin head of the administrative section of the army ordnance corps inspection branch was arrested by the FBI in New York on a bribery charge. She allegedly accepted 100 in twenty dollar bills from Kirby Hummel of Continental Transportation Lines during a lunch meeting. The FBI says she sought to shake down the firm for passing on government contracts. Taplin previously worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Kansas City before joining the army.
Erle Jolson widow elopes with Norman Krasina Hollywood producer. The couple wed today in Las Vegas in a judge led ceremony at a wedding chapel.
In Paris the United Nations assembly again rejected Red China’s bid for membership while approving Italy’s admission as a full partner by a 54 to 0 vote with Soviet veto anticipated in the Security Council. American backing led by Rep. John Vorys supported Italy. The session also upheld Chiang Kai Shek’s Nationalist China as the legitimate representative of China in the UN.
