Taos to Install New Street Lights

Taos City Council voted to replace incandescent street lights with a mercury vapor system and appointed a committee with the power company to locate the first 23 lights. The council also approved hiring an engineer for preliminary sewer feasibility studies. Bad weather kept key attendees away and delayed a traffic ordinance. A January meeting update and a special later meeting were planned.

Con Man Swindles Elderly Woman With Lightning Rod Trick

An elderly Cole County woman fell victim to a lightning rod refund scam on Tuesday. A man posing as a Maryville lightning rod company salesman charged 125 dollars for repairs, then asked for a 962.50 check promising a 1.20 refund, cashed the check in forty minutes and vanished. Authorities seek a white male about 40 years old, 5 feet 7 inches, medium build with dark brown hair in a dark blue suit driving a dark green car.

MSTA could be expelled from NEA over unification plan

The Missouri State Teachers Association faces possible expulsion by the National Education Association after an executive committee meeting set for Jan. 17 in Washington to present a unification plan. Missouri president Georgia Calton said the state group previously rejected 12 unification proposals citing dues and perceived limits of state action. The NEA had warned of expulsion unless a plan was offered.

Training planes collide over South Carolina

In a night interception training exercise a jet fighter and a transport plane collided and crashed near Conway and Loris in northeastern South Carolina. The Air Force reported no survivors among 13 aboard the two planes. Witnesses described the crash as vivid with wreckage burning as they searched through the night.
