Freezing rain halts traffic and schools in Jefferson City

Freezing rain left area streets icy and hazardous with at least ten state highway fatalities across the region. In Boone County, a Sunday ice crash on Route A killed Jerry R. Spencer, 17, and Linda Gibson, 16, injuring four others. City crews treated roads, bus service suspended, and most area schools closed. City meetings were postponed to Tuesday.

A 21-year-old Jefferson City man sustained non disabling injuries in a Monday morning one car crash on East High Street. Ali A. Zargar of 1108 Bald Hill Rd. told officers his vehicle skidded on icy streets.

Jones named county auditor in Cole County

Gov Warren E Hearnes appointed David M Jones 1212 Carter St to be Cole County auditor as the county becomes second class January 1 Jones will oversee a perpetual property inventory and county accounting system audit records issue monthly financial statements and countersign licenses He will serve a term to January 1975 with an 8000 salary and staff size to be set by the county court Jones has prior tax and state office experience and is a 35 year resident of the city

Indecent exposure reports investigated in Jefferson City

Jefferson City police checked two indecent exposure reports over the weekend. Both incidents involved a young man seen in a car and later identified as the same person. The first occurred Saturday afternoon on West McCarty Street near the 1700 block, the second at the Ice Arena. An investigation continues.

Strong seeks council input on statewide priorities

James Strong a Republican representative-elect for the 119th District welcomed recommendations from the Jefferson City Council. He will vacate his fifth ward city council seat in January to assume his role and said the council knows best what needs and priorities exist. Strong is touring southern Missouri with other newly elected lawmakers to inspect state institutions and properties.

A Jefferson City woman Mary Shain reported two men grabbed her purse on the Immaculate Conception Church lot at 1208 E McCarty St Then the suspects fled in a light colored car with witnesses obtaining the license number after a brief chase A separate Saturday morning purse snatching report involved two men and an ongoing investigation continues.

Trial set for two on stealing charge

Trial date January 29 in Cole County Circuit Court for Jefferson City men Donnie Joe Koelling and Wilson Shelly Camden charged with stealing in the September 29 service station robbery that netted 576 dollars. Both pleaded not guilty to theft over 50 dollars. Koelling posted 5000 dollar bond and Camden remained jailed.

FBI chief Gray leaves hospital after intestinal surgery

Acting FBI Director L. Patrick Gray II is in good condition after two weeks in Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London Connecticut. He underwent surgery to correct an intestinal obstruction and was released on Sunday.

Couple to be arraigned in Temale Hut armed robbery

A Jefferson City pair Glenn Michael Smith 21 and Phyllis Cameron Ladd 24 of 2107 St. Mary's Blvd. face arraignment in Cole County Magistrate Court today on armed robbery charges from a Friday night hold up at the Temale Hut 611 Mulberry St. Police recovered $335 taken from the restaurant and a customer, and the suspects were arrested by Patrolman Wayne Koestner after the incident. The Boone County prosecutor is reviewing the case and the North Star Service Station robbery on Nov. 26.

Kling Reappointed to Missouri Board of Curators

Governor Hearnes named Fred Kling of Albany to a six year term on the University of Missouri Board of Curators expiring January 1 1979. Two area youths die in icy Missouri crash

The weekend toll on Missouri roads includes Jerry R. Spencer 17 Holts Summit and Linda Gibson 16 Ashland killed when Spencer’s car skidded on ice into the Sanderson vehicle on Boone County Route A. Barbara Gibson 17 Ashland and Anna Hedwig Sanderson 52 Hartsburg suffered injuries. Several others were injured in separate crashes across the state.

Deer strike stops Santa on Alpena highway

Alpena Michigan police report Santa Claus in an orderly at Alpena General Hospital collided with a deer on a highway north of town after leaving a hospital Christmas party. The deer was killed in the collision.
