Jefferson City police start a back to school safety program with the turning on of stop and caution lights near school crosswalks. 20 mph zones apply 7 am to 5 pm on school days, with enforcement beginning Sept. 5 and officers and safety patrols aiding at crossings.
In Liberty Missouri presiding Judge Edward J Wuuk says the Clay County Court will release 42000 in tax rebates withheld from Kansas City after the city closed its police station north of the Missouri River. County Prosecutor Gene Voigts argues funds could not be drawn from one city without withholding from all counties.

John Douglas France, 20, a Ft. Leonard Wood soldier, died from injuries after a motorcycle collided head on with a car on an access road to I 44 east of Waynesville. Driver Joseph Sweeney, 21, and passenger Terry K. Hinkle, 17, were injured. The patrol said the car was being pursued by a trooper when it passed a line of cars in the left lane.

Federal grand jury indicted James Robert J. Smith Fennimore Russell Herrington 43 Kan Wisc Ramona Klein Cass City lawyer on charges of robbing the Metropolitan National Bank of Kansas City. The case also involves Elizabeth Dorothy Jaegers and others in Jefferson City and Lawrence Rehagen Sr.
A federal court in Chicago restrained police from interfering with news coverage during Democratic National Convention week. The U.S. Court of Appeals issued a temporary injunction after district court rulings found the photographers lacked media status and did not name individual officers or the city in a proper party.
In Alaska 373 of 410 precincts reported Gravel leads Gruening 16 820 to 14 354 for the Democratic nomination. Gruening 81, a former newspaperman, will await final results as about 4 500 absentee ballots and remote precincts are counted. Gravel says the U S must honor its Vietnam commitment.

Kansas City police chief C. M. Kelley asks merchants to aid enforcement of an ordinance requiring reporting of buyers of police hand radios and restricting car radios for police broadcasts. Violations carry fines up to 500 dollars or six months imprisonment. enforcement will be strict if voluntary compliance fails.
About 5,000 West Berlin youths marched along Kurfuerstendamm in support of Czechoslovakia. They carried red and Czechoslovak flags and shouted Americans out of Vietnam and Russians out of Czechoslovakia.
