In Hampton Virginia AP the Lunar Orbiter ended the picture taking phase of its moon orbit by targeting Surveyor 1. Earth commands set two pictures to the Surveyor 1 landing site area and from today through September 45 the craft will transmit its captured images.
A pleasure flight plane struck telephone and power lines near an improvised Colony landing strip during the Free Fair. A Monticello housewife, 34-year-old Mrs Carol Jenkins, died. Pilot Earl Veatch of Monticello and three family members were injured. The Cessna 172 had been giving rides to fairgoers.
Barry Goldwater completed a nine day wilderness trip on Idaho’s Salmon River Middle Fork with family and friends. He rode dangerous rapids in three rubber boats under dramatic lightning storms that touched off numerous fires in southern Idaho.
East St Louis School Board signed a new contract with teachers on Sunday averting a strike. Raises ranged from eight and a half to 14 percent. Under the old contract teachers with bachelor's degrees earned 5500 yearly. Local 1220 members were to meet to ratify the agreement, with approval deemed virtually certain. The old pact had expired in June and a strike had been threatened for the third time in two years.
In Jackson County preparations begin to excavate a four acre site along a stream where Claude H. Knoles of the Kansas City Archaeological Society reports finding Hopewell artifacts including arrow heads pottery and deer bones dating back about 1500 years. A qualified archaeologist will supervise the dig.
