Missouri voters faced their first direct test on national repeal tonight as ballots opened in a statewide referendum. Widespread apathy prevailed, with forecasts of a strong repeal majority while officials prepared for final certification in Jefferson City.

Richmond Missouri officers reported a seizure of an illegal 900 foot long and 11 foot wide seine near Richmond. Ray Sisson district warden and Joe B. Green chief reported four men using the gear and that they captured one suspect before the capture was interrupted.
In a disputed address from Oklahoma City on August 1 the governor suggested changes to relief programs and funding. Critics call the proposed "Gay's relief" a misnomer and question the governor's framing of the fund and duties.
Leavenworth, Kas. Aug. 18. Riot inmates were placed in solitary confinement following a disturbance at the prison. Authorities disclosed details after a night check and said the warden would comment in coming hours.
Dr. Stephen A. Newman 60, former superintendent of the Missouri state sanitorium at Mt. Vernon, was killed when his car left Highway 39 near Miller. He had been removed from his post by the Eleemosynary Board and was returning from Miller when the accident occurred. The board had earlier named R. H. Runde acting superintendent. Newman is survived by a widow, a son in Cassville, and a daughter.
Plans formed to entertain 325 farm women at the American Royal Livestock and Horse Show on Aug 18 in Kansas City. Attending were Miss Essie M. Hoyle of Columbia Missouri Home Demonstration Agent and Mrs Hallie M Berrow of St Joseph Missouri.
B. K. Walls, involved in fraud, is in custody in Kansas City region authorities say. The case links to police reports from Cole County and notes Walls as a known armed suspect.

The incident ties to the death of Sergeant Eric O Biorback in Kansas City earlier Thursday.
Dr R L Russell resigns after more than ten years on the State Board of Health. He plans to quit private practice at 1704 W McCarrison and move with his family to Richmond Missouri, where he will join the practice of Dr K P Matinush men, Commissioner of the State Board of Health.
Boonville Missouri Aug 18 Mrs I A Johnston widow of the Kemp er Military Academy founder died after a week of illness. She helped build the school and was born near Marshall Saline county June 27 1877. Survived by Colonel Johnston her husband two sons Major Burris Johnston and Colonel Rea Johnston both of Boonville and two daughters Mrs A M Hitch Boonville and Mrs Alice Foster Ft Bliss Texas. Funeral services will be held in Boonville Sunday afternoon.
County Extension Agent Ty Peer reports wheat meetings in Cole County to end Monday night. Taos meeting starts at 1 30 PM. Over 100 Lohman farmers attended last night as nine meetings have been conducted countywide. Farmers will soon sign wheat core tracts with the government.
A long missing police badge reappears in Topeka prompting public concern over worn emblem safety. Alden Dann located the badge and mailed it back, while authorities checked records but could not identify the original owner.
A guard named P F Reid dropped a shotgun causing injuries to Marshall Menden Vall 30 Al Shuiiw 24 and Vernon Valin 43 as workers from a chain grocery carried money from a car toward a bank. The incident occurred near a tree line opposite a local bank. Authorities report one officer discharged his weapon during the event.
Union workers at Hamilton Brown Shoe Factory in Union Missouri reached a settlement mediated by James Neher. Employees, about 900, will return to work Monday under a wage and hour provision of the NRA code, with guarantees to preserve prior earnings through a six week averaging method if wages drop.

Carole Lombard and William Powell finalized a divorce in Carson City with Lombard blaming temperament. Lombard described Powell as emotional, cruel in language, and frequently temperamental since their Los Angeles marriage twenty six months earlier.
