Jefferson City records show the city as one of the safest for traffic, with a third most dangerous intersection at Southwest Boulevard and U.S. 50 West. After converting Beck Street to one way, accidents at the intersection declined, and overall injuries and fatalities have fallen in recent months.
Maryland Governor Spiro T. Agnew, son of a Greek immigrant, was chosen by Richard M. Nixon as the Republican vice presidential running mate. The 49-year-old former Democrat who switched parties in 1961 rose from Baltimore County leader to state governor, noted for open housing and civil rights actions amid national unrest. Scout Troop 4 awards were announced at a court of honor with recognitions for First Class, Star and life scouts.
About 300 students battled police after a raid on the University of Uruguay seeking clues to a presidential adviser’s kidnapping. Reports said at least one soldier and one student were killed, with hundreds barricaded inside Vazquez Acevedo Institute as police used water, tear gas, and clubs.
A Missouri panel will discuss firearms legislation at 7 30 p m Monday with public invites. The event follows a tense campus protest where police used tear gas against about 200 students and later high schoolers joined in demonstrations in two suburbs.

The Pentagon says the Navy will deactivate 50 ships and about 100 aircraft to meet Congress budget cuts for fiscal 1969. The action aims to save roughly 118 million dollars in the fiscal year starting July 1, with the defense department predicting a 3.3 billion dollar share of the 58 billion total expenditure reduction. The cutback affects small combat vessels auxiliaries and amphibious ships built in World War II along with several aircraft. The Navy's overall strength is expected to dip from 764,572.
The Kiwanis Club of California sponsors an auction at 1 am on the Commons in California. If rain delays, the sale will relocate to the Gerhart Building downtown California.
