Pratt Named District Elks Deputy Ruler
L. B. Pratt of 307 W. High St. is appointed district deputy grand exalted ruler for the Eastern District of the Elks. He succeeds Elmer Birding and will be installed Sept. 1 at the Chicago regional conference. The district includes over 20 lodges. Plans Approved For Pan Am Road Link To Panama
The Pan American Highway Congress approved preliminary plans for the last major 100 million dollar link in the hemispheric thoroughfare. The United States is expected to fund two thirds of the cost while Panama and Colombia cover most of the balance. A 465 mile jungle crossing between Panama and Colombia will be surveyed, with initial surveys estimated at 1.4 million dollars over 14 months. Additional surveys on the Colombian side are pending final route recommendations.

House cuts supplemental bill large sum to Air Force and projects
The House Appropriations Committee slashed 279 million dollars from a supplemental money bill and directed the Air Force not to turn its new academy into a monument to government extravagance. It approved about 1.68 billion of 1.86 billion dollars Eisenhower sought for miscellaneous programs, many military construction items. Cuts included 8.3 million from 29.2 million requested for construction at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Arson Confession Ties Student to City Fires
Kansas City police sought to verify claims by a 21 year old West Hartford Connecticut student that he set two fires in the city. Fred Ennis of the arson squad asked the county prosecutor to file arson charges against Peter Walker Jones who admitted starting a $4,000 drug store fire last Sunday and a basement trash barrel fire. Jones said he also set fires in Connecticut and Massachusetts including a $10,000 blaze at his parents home in West Hartford.

Smallest Helicopter Weighs Only 68 Pounds
Manhattan Beach California aeronautical engineer Eugene M Gluhareff announces his world smallest strap on helicopter weighing 68 pounds. He says the device slips on like a knapsack and can fly about 50 mph for half an hour. It uses jet engines fed with propane gas and two 10 foot rotor blades. The armed forces have shown interest in the device.
