The National Guard lifted the ceiling on enrollment of commissioned and warrant officers and certain World War II veterans to boost officer enlistment. Maj. Gen. Kenneth F. Cramer announced the move in Washington as of August 5.
The chief of the Guard Bureau said the order boosts officer strength in expanded state units by removing officers from unit quota limits enabling more qualified men to enlist. The top figure for officers and men was 341,000 by June 30, 1949, tied to Congress funding, with June strength near 325,000 as volunteers rose. By June 30 only 25,249 officers had signed up versus a 51,000 quota. states may now reach full officer strength and enlist veterans 90 days to under 12 months between Sept 16, 1940 and June 24, 1948. Missouri quotas were revised to 5,281 ground and 1,470 air.
Mrs James Nolan of Lexington returned home Wednesday after visiting her mother Mrs Nellye B Green at 414 Case Avenue. Now visiting Mrs Green is her mother Mrs Effie Tatlow from Tonganoxie Kansas.
The House passed a Republican anti inflation bill 264 to 97 after blocking Truman’s price and wage control plans. Truman called the bill feeble and a veto seemed likely. The measure returns wartime controls on installment buying, tightens bank credit modestly, and boosts federal bank reserves.
Detroit August 5 AP Ford Motor Co announced price increases averaging five percent on all new Ford cars except one model. The hikes amount to about 75 dollars per car, effective immediately, with the company citing rising costs and market conditions as the reason for the move.
In Mexico Missouri on August 1 Charles H. Pulis and Elmer McGee led for the Democratic nomination in Audrain County. Absentee ballots totaling 35 will be counted Friday, delaying the final result to tomorrow.
Ford reduced the price of its six cylinder business coupe by five dollars citing higher material and labor costs and a need to curb present production due to material shortages causing production interruptions.
President Truman said he is hopeful for world peace and for the outlawing of the atomic weapon. He declined to discuss Moscow diplomacy but affirmed his belief that the bomb should be outlawed after proper safeguards by the United Nations.
Twelve year old Billy Bob Lewis escaped with only slight injuries in an accident yesterday due to the fast action of a truck driver Kenneth Basil Hunt of Huntsville. His tractor and semi trailer plunged 30 feet to bridge rail tracks to avoid hitting the bicycle the youth rode. The boy suffered a slight concussion and bruises while the driver escaped unharmed.
An old advertisement promises fast relief from foot itch in one hour. It promotes TEOL a strong fungicide with 90 percent alcohol claiming deep penetration and germ kill. Brandenberger Drug Co sells the product with a 35 cent refund if not satisfied.
In Chicago on August 5 AP reports a New York men’s pair and the defending women’s champion pair won championships in the 22nd semi national and world bridge tournament. Women’s winners were Mrs. L. Goldstein of Cincinnati and Mrs. M. Gutman of Covington Ky with 376 points. Men’s winners were Fred Hirsch and Sam Katz of New York with 49214 points.
