State to Take Over 13.1 Miles of Cole County Roads
The State Highway Commission will assume maintenance for 13.1 miles of local roads in Cole County and similar mileage in all 113 counties as part of Missouri's new farm to market highway program. About 10 to 15 miles per county will shift from local to state responsibility, easing county maintenance costs. Roads in Cole County include Route E from near Brazite to Route B, Route V from west of Russellville to Moniteau County line, and Route 7Z from near Brazite to Route AA near Miller County. The move follows a gas tax increase from two to three cents per gallon and higher vehicle fees, effective Tuesday.

French Liner Flandre Completes Maiden Voyage
The French liner Flandre was towed into New York harbor to end its maiden trip after a fuel line clog delayed arrival two hours. The 594-foot, 20,500-ton vessel sailed from Le Havre July 23, the largest built in France since World War I.
