Grain Deficit Faces Allies
Berlin dispatch says Germany’s enemies face heavy grain shortages in the second year of war. England’s wheat prices remain far above normal despite some decline, with prices around 58 shillings per quarter versus 30–32 shillings in past years. Russia’s crop is unavailable as Baltic ports fall under German control, forcing reliance on North and South American supplies and India’s surplus. France’s fertile areas are under German control, and overall imports must cover a large gap. Deputy Bedouse warns France will need about $100,000,000 in wheat imports this year.
