Private Joe Fifer Celebrates 75th Birthday in Bloomington
Joseph W. Fifer known as Private Joe and two term governor of Illinois marked his seventy fifth birthday at his Bloomington home. Born October 28 1840 in Staunton Virginia he joined the Twenty third Illinois infantry in 1861 and survived a minie ball wound in 1863. He later studied at Illinois Wesleyan, practiced law, served as Bloomington corporation counsel, sat in the state senate, and won the governorship in 1888 as a Republican.
