Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Aided Westward Expansion
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal played a key role alongside the Baltimore and Ohio in opening western lands. Immigrants traveled from Georgetown to Cumberland to push through mountains while planners envisioned a Potomac navigation system. Washington and Gates backed early efforts, and George Washington helped survey the river. Funds came from multiple states and the federal government, with Maryland later assuming primary responsibility. Williamsport, named for Gen Atho Holland Williams, stood out as a major canal town and once-eyed site for the national capital.
