Lieutenant and Private Rejoin Regiment After 58 Days
After fifty eight days of hardship in Germany a lieutenant and a private of the 140th Infantry escaped from isolation and fought their way back to the front. Surviving on roots and occasional food from woodcutters, they endured cold and hunger, later making a dash to French lines. The lieutenant earned the Cross of Honor and the private a military medal with a sub-lieutenant’s stripe. The report also notes other wartime tales including a Kaiser’s son seen in Rheims, and General Castlenau mourning his wounded son before vowing vengeance.
