Fatal Accident at Logging Camp Claims Cumberland Youth

Stanhope M. Peatt, 81, a Cumberland native and popular young man, died instantly at a logging camp near Union Bay when a broken tree fell during logging operations. An inquest in Cumberland noted the death occurred at 4:30 pm on September 7 while Peatt worked for Bloedel Stewart Welch. Funeral services were held at Holy Trinity Church with many floral tributes and attendance from family members in Victoria and Nanaimo.

Happy Valley Five Wins Multitude of Honors in Soccer Tournament

The Happy Valley Five led by Conti Stubbart Horne Bannerman Hunden and Rowan won 13 teams at a South Wellington soccer tournament on Labor Day weekend. Hunden scored nine goals and Bannerman and Conti won multiple events while the squad earned about 250 dollars in prizes.

Johnston Dunbar Wedding in Comox Featured Nanaimo Couple

The ceremony took place yesterday at ten o clock in Comox. Harold Leslie Johnston and Jessie Dunbar, noted Nanaimo residents, were wed. Miss Dunbar recently served as Lady Superintendent at Campbell River Hospital. Mr Johnston works in the Vancouver lumber trade. Guests included Frank Randall as groomsman and Nellie Gannon as bridesmaid. Honeymoon starts at Cameron Lake before trips to Vancouver and Victoria.

Cumberland School Overcrowded With Receiving Class At 60

Cumberland Public School faces overcrowding as the Receiving Class reaches 60, forcing split sessions with half the pupils attending mornings and the rest afternoons for a month. An upcoming government contract may add four rooms and another teacher, with two new furnaces installed to improve comfort. Total enrollment reaches 649, up 33 percent from June.

Presentation To Arthur Wilkinson By Cumberland United FC

Cumberland United Football Club and supporters held a supper and presentation for Arthur Wilkinson the celebrated full back leaving for dental studies at Portland. Charles Graham praised his sportsmanship and loyalty while presenting a gold watch. Wilkinson thanked the club, wished them success, and joked about returning to claim more teeth from players. The evening featured songs recitations jokes and football gossip ending with Auld Lang Syne.

Autoists Fall Into Police Trap on Sandwich Road

On Sunday a speed test by Constables Mortimer and Dawley found seventeen cars exceeding 80 mph along the Sandwich road. Dr. Lyons of Seattle pleaded to be dealt with summarily and was fined $19 plus costs after Magistrate Hames heard the case. evidence put him at 37 to 38 mph.

Japanese donors pledge 244 dollars for Cumberland Memorial Hall

The Cumberland district Japanese contribute 244 dollars toward the Memorial Hall construction fund. Mr Y Takahashi forwards the check to Mr C J Bunbury as secretary of the G W V A. A list of subscribers by town and amount is published, with further gifts anticipated from Courtenay and Comox.

Court of Revision Opens Monday for Voter List

The Court of Revision sits at Cumberland Court House at 10 a.m. Monday to review the new voters list. Up to this point no appeals are recorded against the roughly six thousand names. Eligible residents may apply in person at the sitting to add their names even if omitted or late under the Elections Act. The move to allow court additions is controversial amid criticism of the Oliver government’s policies.
