First Meeting Held in New Memorial Hall

The G. W. V. A.'s first meeting in the new Memorial Hall was Tuesday. The audience included Women’s Auxiliary members and discussed returned soldier matters, janitorial duties, and decorating the reading room. A potential public opening was debated, with invites to donors and party representatives. weekly meetings move to Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

Granby Fatality Attributed to Runaway Timber Car

Coroner's inquest at Ladysmith into the Granby Colliery No 1 death of James Mitchell on August 30 1920 finds accidental death by a runaway timber car. Jury urges timber trucks be fitted with coal car drags and that no trips travel without drags.

Higgins Fined For Furious Driving

In Courtenay court on Monday Bert Higgins was fined 100 dollars and costs after pleading guilty to furious driving. The prior negligent driving charge was withdrawn and Higgins warned to improve conduct or face up to 300 dollars and possible jail if repeated. A Bergstrom remained hospitalized but recovering from injuries from a prior accident.

Court of Revision of New Voters List Sits in Cumberland

A Court of Revision will convene at the Court House in Cumberland on Monday September 13 to revise the Comox Electoral District voters list. Individuals claiming eligibility may apply in person to be registered at the sitting, even if omitted or not previously applied. The applicant list is posted and may be inspected at the registrar of voters office in Cumberland.

Nanaimo Kennel Club Dog Show Coming This Month

Entry forms with classifications and rules for the Nanaimo Kennel Club dog show to be held on the 21st and 22nd of this month are ready for distribution. They will be sent on application to J. Pearson, Secretary, Nanaimo Kennel Club, Nanaimo, or by visiting the office.

Ladysmith Colliery Picnic Set For September 11

Arrangements are well under way for the annual picnic of the Ladysmith section of the employees of Canadian Collieries Limited. The event will be held Saturday next likely on Agricultural Society grounds, with a full daytime program followed by an evening dance.

Cumberland Rod and Gun Club Formed At English Pool Rooms

A large meeting at English's Pool Rooms led to forming the Cumberland Rod and Gun Club with R Coe as president and P Shearer as secretary. Dues set at 25 cents monthly. Committees named for Gun and Red departments. Secretary to contact Capt Beadwell on fish stocking and damwork to aid fish access.

City Council Debates War Memorial Funds and Local Board Idea

The council discusses loaning 190 to the G W V A for war memorial expenses and keeps the funds for the memorial tablet. They consider a Local Government Board for BC councils and vote to file the matter. Trophies for Cumberland are shipped and a public display plan is debated. Byelaw to curb wandering cows passes, city dump abuses are criticized, and an extra wagon is approved.

Memorial Hall for the G W V A is completed with War Veterans and Woman's Auxiliary to furnish it. The building was donated by Canadian Collieries and the Cumberland lot, with a detailed list of subscribers and initial contributions from local businesses and individuals. Formal opening to follow with additional pledges noted as forthcoming.
