Ottawa reports Canadian importers pledge to cease Russian coal shipments for the upcoming fall and winter, with only cargoes already afloat allowed. Sir George Perley warns that if the pledge is not fulfilled, the government will invoke the dumping clause of the Customs Act to stop further unloadings.
Early week forecast claimed snow would cover the district and it did. Wednesday noon began falling and by evening three to four inches lay on the ground. Southend soccer team of Nanaimo have signed Jimmy Knight from the Vancouver Thistles and Henry Watson of the Cumberland Eagles will play outside right in Sunday's match against St. Andrews. A Saturday ceremony at St Andrews Wesley Church Vancouver joined Colonia Catherine Wilson and Gordon Lewis in marriage. The bride wore pale mauve and yellow silk Maire, was given by her brother-in-law M B Stewart, with Miss J E Robertson as bridesmaid. After a reception at Love's Cafe the couple left for Seattle and Portland and will reside in New Westminster. Mrs Beavan, well known in Cumberland, attended.
Kathleen Hannah, daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Winram, married George A Tarbell son of Mrs Charles A Tarbell of Cumberland at St Margaret s Church Winnipeg. Rev F Glover officiated. They left for Chicago then Cumberland for residence.
Cumberland clubs hosted a lively Wednesday night with Conservative and Eagles games and a later return match set for the Waverley Hotel. The Oddfellows, Maynard trophy contenders, and veterans also posted wins as social gatherings followed sports.

A. S. Towell of Nanaimo was elected president for 1980 81 at the Central Vancouver Island and Comox Valley Teachers Institutes three day convention in Port Alberni. The gathering drew about 100 delegates and discussed unity with Comox district, pay system inquiries, and next year’s meeting planned for Nanaimo.
A Royston Lumber Company worker was admitted to Cumberland General Hospital after a fall on a low log caused a deep cut behind the shoulder. The injury severed a major tendon and nearly reached the lung. he is resting easy and progressing as expected.
Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department responded to a roof fire at the home of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Geidt on Sunday about two o clock. The blaze was confined to the roof with minor damage to rafters and shingles. a repair man will be needed for fixes.
In Nanaimo city police court two Extension Mine firebosses and one from South Wellington pleaded guilty to loading more than one shot at a time. Prosecution by Provincial Inspector George O'Brien. All three fined ten dollars plus costs before CH Beevor-Potts.
