Cumberland Council Debates School Work and Tax Refunds

At a regular Cumberland City Council meeting the council drops silent policemen for now and approves refunds of church taxes and a five percent penalty to Mrs. Foster. Talks surface over school grading payments and whether the School Board will cover the curb and grading bill, with future dealings to be in writing and signed by city officials.

Crown Preparing for Third Trial in Murder Case

A. B. McDonald of Vancouver, Crown prosecutor, talked with Police Sergeant A. Dunbar in Cumberland about the Wong O Sang murder case. This marks the third trial after two prior Vancouver trials ended in hung jury and conviction with a death sentence. The third trial is set for Nanaimo during the Fall assizes beginning October 16, with J. A. Russell again defending Wong O Sang.

Cumberland Commercial School Sees Rapid Shorthand Progress

Oliver McEwan lauds Cumberland Commercial School pupils for transcribing 43 to 63 percent of print into shorthand from The Irelander and other sources in three weeks. He credits the teacher and hopes recognition follows. The school has moved to a larger room at the Union Hotel.

The Phoenix Brewery faces a Liquor Act violation charge and will be tried on October 20 at Courtenay for selling beer in contravention of the act.

Courtenay Clean-Up Day Brings City Together

Courtenay held a Wednesday Clean-Up with Fire Chief Thomson, Mayor Simms, and aldermen leading a tour of the business district to collect refuse and clear alleys and basements. Public School students aided by forming cleanup teams and gathering discarded items. A large bonfire drew about two hundred children and many adults to close the day in festive cleanup.

Explosion report schools safety rules at British Columbia mine

The Wil kin son inquiry into the August 80 disaster at Cumberland No 4 coal mine cites an arc in an electric trailing cable as the cause. Eighteen workers died, including two British subjects, one Russian, six Japanese and nine Chinese, from a flash near a longwall face. Recommendations urge fireproof underground installations, armored cables, dead circuits during blasting, and distance limits for main feed terminals, with immediate adoption of rules and further study.

Union Bay Seen Ideal Site For Coast Range Steel Plant

A public report outlines fuel and power resources for a proposed 15 million dollar steel plant by Coast Range Steel Co. at Union Bay. The study cites Union Bay coal production potential up to 4,000 tons daily within three years, 200 coke ovens on Comox coal, 10 000 horsepower hydro power with option to expand to 20 000, and nearby Campbell River Falls to meet future energy needs. Heroic nurse honored by hospital and company

A Cumberland General Hospital notice recalls the six week illness and death of nurse Alexander Walker, a veteran of the 88th Battalion who served overseas and later worked with Canadian Collieries. The community honors include a funeral, Knights of Pythias and Great War Veterans participation, and tributes to Nurse Bolatti who leaves Cumberland with gifts from the hospital, company and staff.

Courtenay Council Plans Street Repairs and Talks At Meeting

Courtenay City Council met to approve routine items and outline street repairs on the Union Bay road and Lake Trail. City clerk G B Wood was named delegate to the Union of BC Municipalities at Kamloops. Public Works Minister will visit to discuss compensation to Albert Kerton for land taken to widen the Lake Trail. Re assessment of the city was discussed as water connections exceed 200.

Mending of Streets Under Way on Dunsmuir Avenue

The Barrett Company engineer from Vancouver arrived to supervise tarvia repairs on Dunsmuir Avenue. Five thousand gallons were purchased and after limited good weather the street work is progressing well and expected to present a smooth surface for the city.

Chinatown Assault Guilty in Provincial Court

Magistrate Baird found Mah Wing Dong guilty of assaulting Mah long in Chinatown this week. He was fined 10 dollars plus costs in the Provincial Police Court.

Serious blaze destroys George B. Smarts grocery store

Fire at 2 am gutted the George B. Smart grocery and butcher shop in Union Bay. Loss estimated at 4000 dollars, partly insured. Smart, resident of Courtenay, was alerted after leaving his store and arrived last evening. Look out for the Foresters', Folly.
