Lord Roberts Dies in France After Pneumonia

London reports Field Marshal Sir Frederick Roberts died last night in France from pneumonia. A telegram to Lord Kitchener from Field Marshal Sir John French confirms the death of England's greatest soldier. Roberts, born 1832 at Cawnpore, served through the Indian Mutiny and Afghan campaigns, winning the Victoria Cross in 1858 and leading relief of Kandahar in 1880.

City Council Adopts Measures and Adjourns

The Mayor presided over the ordinary meeting with Aldermen Parnham MacDonald and Mitchell present. Minutes were read and approved. A Victoria firm’s request to reship four hydrants was noted. The City Constable’s horse and vehicle list was received and livery licenses enforcement ordered. A request by the B C Anti-Tuberculosis Society for a contribution was referred for investigation. The court of revision of voters list to be advertised. Ald Farnham granted loan of city hall chairs for masquerade hall. Water pipe to Isolation Hospital ordered to be covered. Meeting adjourned.

Carvell Attacks General French Over Militia Report

Liberal MP F B Carvell ridicules General Sir John French and his report on Canadian militia in a House of Commons clash. He branded French’s ideas as ridiculous and questioned the minister Hughes, asking what Canadians now think and whether French’s visit was a misfortune.

Saturday night dances to resume early next year

The Saturday night dances, successful last winter, will be recommenced early in the coming year, bringing back community entertainment and social gatherings for residents.

Grace Methodist Church Choir Hosts City Hall Concert

A full City Hall audience enjoyed a Monday evening program by the Ladies Aid Society of Grace Methodist Church. The show featured music, a recitation, a dialogue and tableaux with contributions from Mr. Taylor and Boy Scouts, plus performers including Misses McKenzie Saville Haywood Bickle Elliott and Messrs Banks Gallagher Kirkham Pearson Wilcocks Brown. The pastor and audience praised the event and a National Anthem closed the program.

Italy has called up its last reserves and will have full fighting strength under arms before year’s end. Reports from London say two major battles in Poland may decide the war, with a third in East Prussia progressing. Russia and Germany claim progress at Cracow and along the Vistula Warthe front. Petrograd dispatches report Przemysl siege nearing end with cholera reported in the garrison.

Parcel shipment from Denman Island aids Vancouver women

The Women's Patriotic Society reports a parcel sent to Vancouver this week containing 7 flannel shirts 15 hospital nightshirts 6 pairs of socks 2 pairs of mittens 4 helmets 20 housewives kits. Workers are asked to bring in all work by Tuesday afternoon or by 10 am Wednesday to mail the large parcel before Xmas.

Church Services Follow Usual Schedules In Town

The city churches keep normal services with morning and evening prayers in Presbyterian and English churches while Methodist holds a single 7 p.m. service and Sunday school at 2 30. Brilliant Host At Masked Ball Draws Wide Attendance

The masquerade dance in the Band Hall on Recreation Grounds Tuesday night, organized by the West Cumberland Conservative Band and the West Cumberland United Football Team with help from the Young Ladies Basketball Club, attracted nearly 400 attendees from Campbell River, Courtenay, Union Bay and Bevan. The hall was large and music praised. the crowd enjoyed themselves throughout the evening.
