Local residents travel to Vancouver Victoria and Sound cities and return. Officials and performers head to Cumberland Victoria Island for concerts and Empire Day events. New appointments include Alexander Auchinvale and W A Owens in Canadian Collieries Cumberland Union Bay and Nanaimo.
A motivational verse urges persistent effort and resilience. It extols boosting the town’s advancement, praising the booster who rises after every fall and continues to lift others through sunshine or rain.
The memorandum on compulsory military service states the minimum age for service will be twenty. It notes voluntary enlistment often begins at eighteen but older recruits resist hardship better. The United States sets twenty-one. Canada will fix twenty as the lowest age for conscription after reviewing overseas troop conditions.
Education Department arranging a summer school in Victoria from July 8 to August 8 open to all provincial teachers without fees. Courses cover Rural Science Art Household Science Vocal Music and Manual Training taught by a large staff of specialists. Circulars with full information will be mailed to teachers province wide.
The Denman Island Dramatic Society held a successful entertainment at Denman Island Hall to aid the Union Bay Red Cross Society. An amount of 80 dollars was handed to the treasurer at Union Bay.
Perry Robinson describes the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada buried on Vimy Ridge as a proud memorial to Western Canadians from British Columbia and nearby cities. He envisions replacing wooden crosses with a permanent monument set among pines, firs and cedars from British Columbia.
General F B Maurice reports from London that during the Arras fighting British forces took 21 000 German troops from forty divisions, about 600 000 men, while British losses reached 3900 in enemy captures. He notes British losses were 50 percent lower than in the Somme.
Word comes that Pte. Douglas Willimar son of the Rev J X Willimar and brother of Mrs J W Cooke of this city was wounded at the front in the arms and elbow. He has been admitted to No 3 Canadian Hospital at Houtlogne.
At a Vancouver Labour Council gathering in the Temple delegates discussed a draft from London Ontario urging federal action to ban ice cream production during the war. The secretary noted peanuts may be addressed next meeting. In Ilo Ilo Hall a Saturday dance runs 9 to 12 tonight.
May 24 event attracted fewer spectators as many residents joined the front. Canadian Collieries provided free rail transport from Union Bay Bevan Puntledge and Cumberland. A parade of 500 schoolchildren led by the West Cumberland Conservative Band and Mayor Bate preceded the sports day.
Cumberland pushes forward as mines run steadily and freight to the city doubles in six months. Three weeks see twelve pianos and about a dozen new autos arriving, with ten freight cars at Royston on the Wellington Colliery Railway and E N lines bound for Union Bay and Cumberland. Sir Richard McBride resigns as Agent General for British Columbia in England, prompting questions about a local successor.
In the Nanaimo County Court, Wesley Willard is named Official Administrator of the estate of Mary Frances Armstrong deceased. Creditors must file claims by June 15, 1917, with verification via statutory declaration. Debtors must pay debts to the administrator. date and place Cumberland, B C April 14, 1917.
