The Denman Island Dramatic Society held a successful entertainment at Denman Island Hall to aid the Union Bay Red Cross Society. An amount of 80 dollars was handed to the treasurer at Union Bay.

British capture 21000 Germans in Arras battle

General F B Maurice reports from London that during the Arras fighting British forces took 21 000 German troops from forty divisions, about 600 000 men, while British losses reached 3900 in enemy captures. He notes British losses were 50 percent lower than in the Somme.

Word comes that Pte. Douglas Willimar son of the Rev J X Willimar and brother of Mrs J W Cooke of this city was wounded at the front in the arms and elbow. He has been admitted to No 3 Canadian Hospital at Houtlogne.

At a Vancouver Labour Council gathering in the Temple delegates discussed a draft from London Ontario urging federal action to ban ice cream production during the war. The secretary noted peanuts may be addressed next meeting. In Ilo Ilo Hall a Saturday dance runs 9 to 12 tonight.

Celebration Held At Recreation Grounds With Light Attendance

May 24 event attracted fewer spectators as many residents joined the front. Canadian Collieries provided free rail transport from Union Bay Bevan Puntledge and Cumberland. A parade of 500 schoolchildren led by the West Cumberland Conservative Band and Mayor Bate preceded the sports day.

Cumberland pushes forward as mines run steadily and freight to the city doubles in six months.
