A squadron of United States torpedo destroyers crossed the Atlantic and now patrols the war zone near Queenstown. British and American officers exchanged greetings as the ships prepared for immediate duties, with one destroyer already escorting a large Atlantic liner through danger waters.
The Willows Hotel dining room in Campbell River hosted Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thulin on May 6 1917 to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Guests included Mr. and Mrs Fred Thulin Lund BC, Dr and Mrs Shaw, and many others from Campbell River Vancouver and Lund. Numerous presents and congratulations were exchanged.
C H Terbell and Son purchase a Wilkes Knight automobile for use with their Courtenay to Cumberland hardware business. George Tarbell will convert their Russell car into an auto delivery truck.
Ilo Ilo cinema listings announce The Voice on the Wire tonight with a dance in Ilo Ilo Hall from 9 to 12. Next week showcases include Cleo Madison in Black Orchids Nannette of the Wilds with Pauline Frederick Flora Parker de Haven and Carter de Haven in a Redfeather comedy Irene Fenwick in The Yellow Pawn and a Girl From Frisco episode.
The United States Navy aims to assist Allied powers while protecting its coastlines. Admiral Sims will manage destroyer usage based on conferences with British and French admirals. Over fifty faster more powerful destroyers are under construction and will be commissioned in stages through the coming year.
The Empire Day festival in Cumberland will be held on May 24 with activities from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. A $650 budget funds parades, races, a football match Ladysmith vs Cumberland, First Aid contest for the William Sloan Shield, and a ladies basketball game. Competition prizes total 10, 5, and 3 dollars for top entrants.
Sergeant Desmond Rowe visited this week. Auditor R H Hunter of the Canadian Collieries arrived Sunday. A Milligan left for Vancouver for hospital treatment. William McFadyen of Royal Bank plans holidays with his parents. No council meeting Monday. Mayor Bate Alderman Bannerman and City Clerk MacKinnon were the only attendees when time expired. Campbell Brothers received a new Auto Delivery Truck and advertise a 15 percent millinery sale. Mrs Alexander Walker Jr reports from Ottawa that Pte Alexander Walker is admitted to 18th Stationary Hospital May 5 with gunshot wounds to face, leg and arm. further details to follow.

Constable Macdonald and special constables raided a Chinatown gambling den Saturday evening, arresting twenty six Chinese men. They posted $320 bail Sunday. In court they pleaded not guilty and sought remand for counsel. The keeper was convicted midnight Thursday, fined 100 dollars and costs, with six months imprisonment in default. The other 23 defendants received suspended sentences.
The Empire Day committee at Cumberland invites citizens from Bevan Union Bay Courtenay Comox and Headquarters to Cumberland for Empire Day on the Recreation Grounds May 24. Robt Henderson and John H Cameron have bought the B C Garage plant and equipment and will reopen immediately. John Newton, Mines Inspector, conducted class certificate examinations under the Coal Mines Regulations Act during his visit.
In the county court of Nanaimo at Cumberland an administrator is appointed for Mary Frances Armstrong. Creditors must mail or deliver claims to Wesley Willard Official Administrator Cumberland by June 15, 1917. A verified statement of claim with name address occupation amount and security must accompany. Debtors must pay debts due. Dated April 14 1917 Cumberland B C.
