Dentist Opens Parlors in Willard Block

Dr. Tai Kuzuhara a dental surgeon arrived Monday and opened dental parlors in Willard Block on Tuesday. A graduate of St. Louis University he has practiced in Vancouver three years and served as president of the Japanese Athletic Club. He holds a British Columbia license and is interested in baseball and football.

Chalk up Twelve Errors Against Local Baseballers

Cumberland defeated the local team 14 to 7 in a league baseball game amid a rough defensive showing with twelve errors attributed to both sides. The sun blinded the outfielders at times but fans saw active batting while Cumberland closed in on the silverware.

Annual Picnic Promises to be Biggest Ever

A mass meeting of Canadian Collieries employees finalized plans for the 7th annual picnic at Roys Field Royston on Saturday July 19. Special trains run from Union Bay and Cumberland, with free treats for children and games on site. Executive officers and committee chairmen were announced, including Hon. Hospital Queen Crowned at Ilo-Ilo Theatre Ceremony

The crowning of the Hospital Queen, postponed from May 28, was held at noon on Tuesday June 3 in the Ilo-Ilo Theatre. Florence Nightingale Sehl was crowned Queen of Cumberland with Jo sie Balogno and Fannie Strachan as maids of honor, as crowds filled the venue with Boy Scouts guarding.

Intermediates Draw Schedule Set At League Meeting

Representatives from all Intermediate Baseball teams except Bevan attended the Athletic Club meeting. Officers were elected with Thos. Graham as Hon. President and William White as President, Alex Denholme as Vice President, Hector Stewart as Secy Treasurer. The previous constitution was adopted with minor changes and a draft league schedule was presented along with permission to use the E G Prior Cup for the trophy.

Carpenters re modeled the window area to replace an interior wall with a low oak stained partition. The change makes the store lighter and allows outside observers to see the updated business system at Matt Brown’s Cumberland shop, famed for its pleasant shopping.

City Aldermen held a Monday session to discuss an audit of 1928 city and public school books totaling 478 380 dollars. The panel considered charging the 1924 audit costs and debated a cash shortage of 136 88 dollars from 1923 tied to the 1922 accounts with various arrears and misapplied receipts.

Cumberland High School Gathers Back Principal C B Wood

C B Wood is set to return as principal of Cumberland High School at the start of the new term after a year’s leave for studies at Columbia University. He earned a Master of Arts in Secondary Education and a Teachers College High School Principal's Diploma, with further PhD matriculation work in progress. He studied under notable educators and observed leading American high schools during his leave, and will resume duties with experience from New York visits and Ontario collegiate institutes planned for June.

Local Boy Wins Athletic Honors at Victoria School

Tom Graham son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Graham won the Senior Athletic Championship at the University School Victoria BC. He set school records in two events, continuing a family success after his brother Morton Graham won the school senior championship last year.

Provincial Party Candidates Meet in Hoflo Theatre

The Provincial Party held a meeting in the Hoflo Theatre on Thursday June 5th chaired by Major Clarke. George Every-Clayton the Provincial Party candidate for Comox, Bert Showler Labor candidate of Vancouver, and 1D S Tait of Victoria spoke to about a hundred attendees amid light enthusiasm and heavy rain. Showler discussed company downsizing visits over eighteen months and highlighted Cumberland’s eight hour day.
