Towns demand immediate removal of noxious weeds with owners facing charges for work done by the corporation. In Vancouver area thistles on Dunsmuir Avenue are knee deep, prompting a citizen proposal to form a committee to mow and place clippings on the Council Chamber seats to spur action.
George Mordy appointed to a position in the local branch of the Royal Bank of Canada. Harold Woods promoted to teller replacing Alex Watson, who transferred to Chilliwack and left Friday morning for his new duties. R Bryce departed for Vancouver Friday morning. C D Hobbs of Victoria, purchasing agent for Canadian Collieries Dunsmuir Ltd., arrived Saturday.
The local Red Cross society reports a successful Rose Tag Day last Saturday raising 156.91 dollars for the French Red Cross. Gratitude is extended to roses donors taggers and the public. A five dollar donation is noted for the June collection. The regular meeting will be in the Presbyterian Church basement on Tuesday July 24 after the monthly collection on Monday July 23.
Victoria’s Sergeant Richard Pearce is appointed Chief of Police for Cumberland. He joined overseas forces in 1914, served two years, and earned the Distinguished Conduct Medal at Hooge Belgium on August 9 1915. He arrived Sunday and began duty Monday morning. James M. Savage of Canadian Collieries Dunsmuir Ltd left for Victoria Monday and is expected back this evening.
The City Council met in regular session led by Mayor Bate with Aldermen present. Issues discussed include Board regulations for workers compensation forms, tax arrears, and a tax sale set for September 26. Delinquent ratepayers urged to pay portions and arrange future payments.
London reports heavy bombardment and an initial German push on the Belgian coast. German forces reached the right bank of the Yser near the sea after a 24 hour bombardment, with bridges destroyed and British lines briefly penetrated. Reports note continued fighting along the Belgian front as sounds of big guns echoed to London. William McFadyen of the Royal Bank of Canada, Chilliwack, plans a Cuba posting after two weeks’ vacation.
Amsterdam reports Dutch workers say a quarter of the Essen Krupp plant was destroyed in a French air raid. The damage runs to millions of francs with 100 workers killed and hundreds injured including 45 French prisoners. London cites Berlin saying only two bomb holes were found at Essen, with bombs hitting nearby villages and Treves.
Ottawa reports Sir Thomas White assures House that government will not target legitimate savings with new taxes. He stresses thrift and national saving will be encouraged while any income tax would apply only to those with incomes justly bearing war costs.
Private Albert Shillitto of the 102nd Battalion North British Columbia Regiment returned from the front Wednesday evening. A public reception at Ilo Ilo Theatre featured Mayor Bate presenting a welcome address praising his service and sacrifices, with remarks from Rev H A Mawhinney Serjeant Richard Pearce and a large crowd in attendance.
