Regular Meeting of CHY Council Sets Tax Sale Date

The CHY City Council met Monday with Mayor Bate and Aldermen Bannerman Brown Carey and McDonald present. They approved a tax sale for September 26, 1917, refused a road tax refund for J. Moore and Thos. Dobie, ordered a $4.12 Compensation Board payment, and decided to tax hire autos at $2.50 every six months. The board referred several accounts for payment and discussed sidewalk and pole repairs.

War Savings Certificates to Be Sold in Canada

Ottawa reports war savings certificates will sell for 8.60 and return 10 after three years. Finance Minister Sir Thomas White says 10 million dollars is now available for war purposes, with over 140,000 certificates sold since January in 25 50 and 100 dollar denominations. Weekly sales have fluctuated between 200 000 and 300 000 dollars.

Local Hero Lieut A H Macfarlane In City Visit

Lieut A H Macfarlane M C arrived in the city on leave to visit his parents Mr and Mrs D R Macfarlane Buck Macfarlane has been twice wounded first on October 2 1916 during the capture of a Regina trench and again on April 9 in the assault and taking of Vimy Ridge He was decorated with the Military Cross in recognition of gallantry and devotion to duty.

Ford dealer in Courtenay sells forty four cars in 1917

K C Emde proprietor of the Ford garage Courtenay reports forty four Ford cars sold in the district during 1917. The last sale went to J W Nordgren of the city. Emde expands business into other directions and adds William Dingwall to handle rising trade.

Paris reports a major Verdun victory with French forces capturing Meuse defences along over eleven miles and penetrating German lines to a depth of a mile. More than 5000 unwounded prisoners taken amid heavy artillery duels and renewed infantry action across the 12 mile front.

Ottawa reports western Liberals and grain-growers have left for Winnipeg to finalize union with Sir Robert Borden. Western leaders from Saskatchewan and Alberta expected to meet, with the Saskatchewan and Alberta picks likely to join the government in a joint administration. The central issue is exact representation and names while Laurier remains opposed to conscription.

The weekly tally shows British merchant ships sunk by submarines or mines slightly higher than the prior week. Official figures: 15 vessels over 1,600 tons sunk, 3 under 1,600 tons, plus two fishing vessels. arrivals 2,838 and sailings 2,764.

Corporal J. H. Vaughn from Cumberland is reported wounded in action. The bulletin confirms injuries but gives no details on location or severity.

Raiders Attack English Coast Sees Bombing and Casualties

German aircraft raided the English coast with attacks on Kent and Yorkshire. Dover Ramsgate and Margate sustained bombs causing eleven deaths and thirteen injuries in the first two raids, Ramsgate heavy damage, Yorkshire damage and one injury. London issued an air raid warning and the all clear followed about an hour later.

Slacker deserters warned for crossing to Canada

Seattle reports that all men liable for military service who escape into Canada will be returned and tried as deserters. Irving M. Zeirhaus, secretary to Governor Lister, said the War Department may direct immigration officials to detain draft age men attempting to cross the border amid calls from a local exemption board chair for action. Local officials say many draft age men have left the country.

Deliberate Fire Attempt at St George's Presbyterian Church

At about 1 am Messrs. F L Leslie and J W Walker stopped a deliberate fire at St George's Church in Cumberland. Sacks of shavings saturated with coal oil were placed at the entrance and set, flames reaching doors and ceiling before the two men and police extinguished them. Insurance through London and Lancashire covers about $100 in damage.
