Courtenay climbed to second place Sunday by beating Pilsener 15 to 8 in a poorly played contest. Errors and miscues plagued both sides as Courtenay capitalized on miscues, passed balls, and timely hits to pull ahead early and widen the gap through the game.
Courtenay and Pilxener shine as McNeil and Thomas drive runs in a baseball league game. Taxes on balls and stolen bases feature prominently with Courtenay swiping a bag and a wild pitch by McNeil affecting the standings.
The afternoon game between Courtenay and Union stretched to 17 innings before Courtenay broke the tie and won. Al ball dominated. Donnelly walked and scored on Stanley's error in the second, Union answered with two in the fourth as Cur rin and E. Bale delivered singles, and Stanley drove in two more in the fifth after Clark walked and stole.
The Bay tournament featured a 2-1 ten inning victory by Union Bay over Pilsener in the morning. Courtenay beat Union 5-4 in seventeen innings in the final as a disputed three-base hit in the tenth decided the game amid protests from Pilsener manager Hennessy.
The schedule lists matches between Union Courtenay and Cumberland from July to Sept with venues including Union Courtenay and Cumberland venues. Key dates include July 10 July 17 July 24 July 31 August 7 August 14 August 21 August 28 September 11 and September 18.

Comox and Admiral W. Allsop of HMS Egeria attended a naval funeral yesterday for A. B. of Comox who drowned in the harbour two weeks earlier the body recovered two days ago at Oyster River. HMS Egeria departed for northern fishing grounds this week.
Curtis presented scenes labeled Proceedings at the Cumberland Development League meeting. The Incal Orangemen plan July 12 events with a large prize list. A public meeting decided to donate 100 pounds from May 24 celebrations to the Orangemen committee to fund the day’s programme.

Mr. W Reesman, an employee of the Fraser River Company, died in a strange accident last Thursday night. He either fainted or cramped, collapsed in an outhouse, and suffocated. His companion Recaiian was found dead next morning in night attire. An inquest found no prior ill health. A brother in Hoquiam, Wash, arrived for the funeral held at Sandwich Presbyterian Church with Rev Me Menzies officiating.
On Denman Island a bear blamed for weeks of sheep damage was shot Sunday morning by the Piercy brothers after stalking a pig near Mrs. T H Piercy’s yard. Hervey Piercy’s shot broke the bear’s shoulder, and the animal was killed when pursuers shot it in the head. The head will be mounted in Vancouver for the Piercy household.
Report indicates an uptown station will host a new pool room opening this summer. The project aims to attract patrons seeking recreation in a central location.
The death occurred on Wednesday after a lingering illness of Mr Joseph Potter aged 75. Born in Staffordshire England 1806 he came to Nova Scotia as a young man and spent 62 years there. He left behind sons James Joseph David William and John living in Canada. Funeral arrangements were made five months prior and the service from his residence was well attended led by the Cumberland City Band.
The event on July 1 exceeded prior celebrations with a Cumberland contingent train arrival at 10 80 AM and baseball and athletic events starting by 1 80 PM. A dance ended the day with Morgans Orchestre. finance committee reported a balance of forty four dollars to be split between the school and public Library. The city council held a regular meeting with Mayor and Aldermen present. A delegation urged erecting an arch for the Orange celebration on Dynamure Avenue, which was granted. The council discussed a $1200 addition for the city hall and a three year lease, plans to be submitted next meeting. Additional items include police uniforms, a misconduct report, tax receipts, clerk salary raise, and bids for stump blasting. meeting adjourned.
Mr John Hawkins temporary manager at Courteney House suffers a fractured right foot in a wrestling accident. At Fraser River Co camp, Mr Reesman, a popular sub-foreman, drowns after falling into a waterhole near the camp. Also reported is the successful annual strawberry festival held by the Ladies Aid Society for the Presbyterian Church at the Agricultural Hall, Courtney, with well received music and a humorous farce titled Women’s Business Meeting.
