Property Owners Vote on City Purchase Plea
Cumberland voters cast ballots on January 17 to authorize city negotiations to buy the Cumberland Electric Lighting Company and the Cumberland and Union Waterworks Company. Results favored negotiating with 112 yes to 12 no on electric lights and 107 yes to 14 no on waterworks, with 93 majority after a spoiled ballot. The plebiscite aimed only to grant negotiation authority, not binding purchase. The Gedunkers held a New Year meeting at Miss A Haywood's home with prize flowers won by Miss Lillian Banks and several contests and refreshments.
