Sixty citizens from diverse political affiliations gathered Monday night to welcome Mr Neill and present district needs before his eastward trip. The meeting was enjoyable and boosted the member's popularity.
The dinner for Mr. A W Neill, member elect for Comox Alberni, discussed fuel oil and idle Vancouver Island mines. Speakers urged reducing fuel oil imports, boosting coal, and preserving Canadian industry as Cumberland's coal sector faced downturns and oil competition.
Eleven Cumberland Loge members of the Loyal Order of Moose joined a Nanaimo Legion frolic with a 43 piece Vancouver band. Initiates were welcomed during the Cumberland Lodge meeting with twelve new members and officers to be nominated February 18.
The Cumberland Badminton Club holds its first Whist Drive and Dance of the season at the Anglican Church hall on Friday, Feb. 20. A Klondike table feature is added, Whist starts at sharp followed by dancing at 10, with music by Mrs. R. I. Frost Mr. W. A. Owen and Mr. Plump. Refreshments and 60 cent admission.
The Rev John Knox Wright D D of Vancouver will preach at St George s Presbyterian Church Sunday evening. On Monday he lectures at Grace Methodist Church on Our Bible and How It Came to Us with slides. An offering will support the Bible Society funds.
Ratepayers are reminded the first sitting of the Court of Revision of the Cumberland Assessment Roll will be held in the city hall on Wednesday evening next at 7 30 o'clock.
The Women's Auxiliary of the G. W. Vy. A. hosts another whist drive and dance in Memorial Hall tonight. Larger crowds attend each event and Friday’s promise a record turnout.

Barbers across the city slash prices after Mr. Spittal posts 5 cent haircuts and 25 cent shaves, dropping costs from 65 and 85 cents to attract patrons. Other shops quickly follow, letting customers get a haircut and shave for under a dollar.
The Cumberland St. John's First Aid Association invites ladies to a meeting on Friday next February 10 to discuss forming a Ladies First Aid Association. Supporters expect success, plan lectures, and aim to start multiple classes, elevating local women alongside the Nanaimo teams.
Hargreaves and Smith, successors to the Bate Hardware Co, have sold the business to Tommy Nakanishi the Japanese man who was burned in the recent fire. They are closing out stock before the new owner takes over in about a week.
The Cumberland and District Junior Football League executive discussed entries for the O. B. Allan cup and ruled out players over 18 before September 16 1921. They named No 1 No 2 and No 3 teams from eligible players and scheduled a trial game February 11 at Union Bay between Nos 2 and 3 if conditions allow.
A large crowd attended the Women's Auxiliary whist drive and dance at Holy Trinity Church Hall Friday. Winners included first lady Mrs D G Alexander and first gentleman Mr Hassell. consolation went to Miss Grace Watson and Mrs John Cameron. After refreshments, dancing continued to midnight with music by Mrs Frost, Mr Owen, and Mr Plump.
Royston to gain a new Mumford and Walton branch as grocers extend their business. The move promises convenience for Royston residents and campers in the summer season.
About two tons of granite coping stone and brickwork collapsed from the Post Office on Thursday evening. The blast damaged nearby Mrs. Shortt’s home, but no one was hurt. Postmaster Cooke alerted Architect Henderson and authorized removal of dangerous sections. repair crews began work next day.
A rally and smoker for ex-service men will be held in Memorial Hall on Saturday February 11 at 7 o clock. Ex-service men are invited to attend. Comrade Harry Jackson and the entertainment committee have arranged a fine programme of music. Refreshments and smokes will be provided.
The Rev. W. H. Collisson of Kincolrth a pioneer Anglican clergyman who evangelised Northern British Columbia Indians since 1874 died recently. He served Tsimsheans Metlakatla Haldas Queen Charlotte Islands and Nishias with base at Kincollith Nass River. Tributes say he was deeply loved by natives and fellow clergy and his works follow him.
The High School Club held a debate on whether discovery has contributed more to world progress than invention. Douglas Sutherland and Douglas Partridge argued for, Hector Stewart and Alex Bell for the negative. Judge A J Fouracre praised the speeches and awarded the affirmative.

The association backed the resolution after joint discussion with the Provincial Trustees’ Association and the BC Teachers’ Federation. A surprise party was held Tuesday evening at Mrs. T. Wilson's Camp home with friends, cards, games, and singing. Mrs. A. Derbyshire and Mrs. Whitehouse won at whist, and refreshments were served before the group sang She's a Jolly Good Fellow, calling it the best yet.
