Leighton Fire Burns Courtenay Blacksmith

William Leighton of Leighton Bros. was severely burned by a calcium carbide explosion in his Courtenay district shop last Sunday afternoon. A roof leak may have dampened the carbide, causing the blast when he touched it. He rests at his parents’ Lake Trail home.

Freight Boat Service Expands With New Ironback Support

Courtenay shows growing freight activity as the Etta Mac arrives intact through a southeast gale with a scow loaded with general merchandise hay and grain. A second vessel Ironback is brought in to help grow business and run short trips as local leaders plan further campaigns. The Comox Creamery Agency ships potatoes while the Grain Growers and Creamery feed division manager Walton Beard buys the Courtenay Cash Store from Charles Pigott who departs for California after an auction. Mr. Rutherford suffers a broken leg at Hanbury Mill Vancouver and is recovering in hospital.

Mr Max Blunt left on Wednesday for Vancouver aboard RMS Niagara en route to New Zealand his old home. Mrs Robert McQuillan and Miss McQuillan left for Kamloops on Tuesday. The young son of Mr and Mrs Ir Heri injured a finger in a meat chopper at L D Cafe. The steamer Charmer faced a severe south easter across the gulf tying up at Comox wharf. Immigrants Arrive In Winnipeg From Steamships Regina and Antonia

One hundred thirty four new arrivals speaking sixteen languages landed in Winnipeg on November 21 aboard the Regina and Antonia. The party included 30 girls for domestic service under Salvation Army auspices and was distributed across the four western provinces.
