Promises of a great affair surround the forthcoming Baseball Dance on May 2. The organizing committee works hard for a successful event and a prize drawing featuring thirty one prizes will be drawn by a club mascot kept secret until the night. Tickets are on sale now for this drawing and the dance date is May 2.
The Sporting Earl anthologized English film plays Friday and Saturday at the Ilo-Ilo Theatre. It centers on a eccentric will splitting a Baronet’s fortune with the racing horse tale The Sporting Earl starring Victor Herbert and Lillian Hall-Davis, plus Charles Jones in Not a Drum Was Heard.
The C G I T of St George's Presbyterian Church hosted a Mother and Daughter Banquet on Wednesday in the church basement. About forty guests attended, mostly mothers, with a program including toasts, songs, recitations, solos, and moving pictures provided by the club.
Courtenay Troop No 1 and Cubs plan a Sunday parade to St Johns Anglican Church for a service led by Rev J W Flinton. Forest Ranger Bennett will open a four week series Tuesday at the Agricultural Hall on forest growth and protection with essays and prizes for top stories.
The Ladies' Auxiliary of the G W V A hosted an Easter treat for 54 children in the Association Hall on Wednesday from 3 to 6. Ferns and trilliums decorated tables while the ladies served the youngsters, who showed reluctance to leave. The group thanks donors whose contributions brought joy to children whose fathers served Overseas.
Mrs. C. Dando Jr. hosts an afternoon tea next Wednesday from 4 to 6 at 207 Derwent Ave. Proceeds support May Queen Candidate Miss Gladys Dando.
The May Queen hopefuls, led by Miss Florence Sehl and Miss Fanny Strachan, mobilize campaigns with campaign managers and events. A Midnight Matinee in the Iloilo Theatre featured Nanaimo performers including Misa Jean Patterson and Doug Manson. A concert at Headquarters raised funds for candidates, and a War Veterans Hall tea with a raffle complemented week activities. A Novelty Dance for Miss Beatrice Mitchell is planned for Wednesday next week.
The Ladies' Auxiliary of Holy Trinity Anglican Church will hold an afternoon tea and sale of work in the church hall on Wednesday April 30th from 3 to 6. A Home Cooking Stall will feature. All are invited to attend the Hall on Wednesday April 30th. Big novelty dance Il0 110 hall Wednesday April 30th.
A mass meeting chaired by Mayor Parnham heard the Cumberland General Hospital Womens Auxiliary waive the 150 fee for their May Queen Contest. Local school children will vote, raising funds as candidates race toward victory. Week three totals show candidates and a combined 144,630 votes with 10,000 more ballots issued, potential 5,000 dollars.
The operetta Goldilocks and the Three Bears staged last night drew a large Ilo Ilo Theatre audience. Mia Oliver and Mrs. Finch trained many young girls, with all cast delivering strong singing and dancing. Proceeds, after expenses, were donated to the G W V A to aid the association.
Freddy Jones six year old son of Fred and Mrs. Jones formerly Cumberland ran under a lumber truck at 1181 Trent avenue in San Francisco while chasing a baseball. Albert E. Magone of F W Graham Co. was driving the truck and was arrested on a reckless driving charge after aiding the boy. Police indicate the accident was unavoidable as the child ignored danger.
Charles Graham of Canadian Collieries outlines why Vancouver Island coal output faces costly challenges. He cites overestimated district reserves from 4.733 billion tons to about 3.0 billion, with actual recoveries often a small share. He notes barren pockets, high unproductive costs, and opposition misinformed by Vancouver papers and politicians.
Ladysmith won the British Columbia soccer championship at Nanaimo last Saturday by beating St. Andrews of Vancouver 2–0. St. Andrews played most of the match with ten men and had more scoring chances. Tuffy Davis, formerly of Ladysmith now from Seattle, scored both goals. McCormack at centre half was a pillar for Ladysmith, while Campbell of St. Andrews suffered a broken bone above the ankle and was removed from the game.
The Courtenay Choral Society is sparing no effort for an upcoming concert. Tenor Hinstead from Victoria will sing solo parts in Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, accompanied by Mrs. Clifford Warn of the Pacific Coast. Mrs. M. B. Tribe of Courtenay will also perform solos, with additional features planned for a memorable event.

Nanaimo edged Cumberland 2 1 in an exhibition match at the Recreation Grounds last Sunday. Sam Jones scored Cumberland’s only goal. Teddy Gomm assisted for the visitors. Old players impressed despite a long layoff, with Sam Jones and W Massey standout for Cumberland and Watson for Nanaimo. A return game may be planned next year.
A buyer offers spot cash for three small dwellings with four or five rooms each. For details contact Edward W. Bickle, financial and insurance agent, Miss Jessie MacDonald and Mrs. A N Evans and family were guests of Capt John C Brown during the holidays.
The Ladies' Auxiliary hosts the annual Hospital Ball drawing one of the largest crowds in the event's history. Attendees from Courtenay Comox and Union Bay enjoyed pleasant evening and refreshments. Amount raised not yet released but estimated around two hundred dollars.
The Gaiety Theatre hosted the Courtenay-Comox Board of Trade annual masquerade, nearly full. Prizes awarded include Best Sustained Character to Mrs Edwards and Mr Meredith, Best Dressed Lady to Miss Carthew and Miss Beasley, Best Dressed Gent to William Campbell, and other honors to Olga Edwards, Georgina Edwards, and many more. Supper followed at midnight, marking a successful community event.
Forbes Landing attracted a large Easter holiday crowd at Campbell River with the hotel full and guests landing big catches. Len Harding and party from Headquarters netted eighty fine trout in Lower Campbell and Loveland Lakes. Redpath and party fished Lower Campbell Melville and Echo Lakes for sizable hauls. Redpath from Victoria travels with James and Chatwick, London.
