Winning sweep stake numbers in Grand National draw

The Grand National sweep stake sponsored by Mr. Preston Bruce paid the first three horses after a Cumberland Literary and Athletic Association draw. First prize went to horse number 402, second to 658, and third to 146, with money confined to the top three due to few tickets sold.

Unregistered Ministers Cannot Perform Marriages

Under the Marriage Act of 1930 no minister may solemnize marriage in British Columbia after September 1 1980 unless registered with the Registrar. Cumberland Lady Is Bereaved

Mr. Tom Gallivan brother of Miss T A Gallivan of Cumberland Public School died in Chatham New Brunswick at 34. He served in World War I, was wounded and gassed, and returned in ill health. Funeral is planned in Comox at the Roman Catholic Chapel after a service tomorrow.

Powell River Comox Ferry Debate Reignites Local Push

At meetings in Courtenay and Monday, Cumberland Board of Trade members urged support for a Powell River Comox ferry. Farmers urged subsidy while market officials warned of sufficient surplus and urged continuous supply and a clearing house plan from local merchants. A resolution called farmers to unite producers for Powell River market and merchants to act jointly.

Cumberland Eagles Club Hosts Dance for Football Funds

The Cumberland Eagles Football club held a successful dance at Tlo Ilo Hall on Friday night with the Merry Makers orchestra. Attendance grew from a late start to a midnight throng, raising funds for the club. donations included $10 from Edward W. Bickle. Alf McNiven visited with two bear cubs, planning to house them at Grouse Mountain Chalet this summer.

Nomads club hosts games with prize winners named

High School Sports Association Formed

A new Upper Island and Affiliated High School Sports Association was formed by principals and teachers at Courtenay. Delegates from Cumberland Comox and others attended. An inter-sports meet is planned for May 3 at Lewis Park Courtenay with six teams vying for senior and junior titles. Prizes include silver and bronze medals and rosettes. Officers include Ronald Lyons president and G A Lundie secretary.

Cumberland Tennis Club Elects Officers For Season

The Cumberland tennis club held its annual meeting in the Cumberland Literary and Athletic Association lecture room. Attendance was light as the Athletic Club announced it now manages the tennis courts and other facilities. A. J. Taylor is elected president with Dr. R. Hicks as vice president and W. McFarlane as secretary treasurer. An executive committee includes T. Graham, M. Graham and W. A. Cope. Opening date set for Tuesday April 7. The Athletic Club also controls Football Field, Band Hall, bowling green and other winter activities.

Motorist Narrow Escape On Bevan Road

Mr Hughman of Tewan escaped serious injury when a large tree fell onto his car on Bevan Road striking the front end and knocking the hood and wheels to the ground. Bystander Mr Al Ian B Nunne followed closely and assisted, taking the motorist to Gourtenay for repairs with Corfield Motors summoned to tow the damaged vehicle.
