He is charged with murdering a neighbor named Warren six years ago after a quarrel. The body was found with a severe gash. Calahan neither admits nor denies the charge.
William A Pinkerton son of detective Allen Pinkerton was brought to Madison Street Station on a charge of shooting John Dowling proprietor of gambling rooms on West Madison Street. Dowling says Pinkerton fired at him with intent to kill. Two single barrel pistols were found on Pinkerton. He claims the pistol exploded accidentally during handling.
Fire near Scranton destroys two million dollars in property. Bark, track, gravity road, and company assets burn while wildlife flees underbrush along the Susquehanna. Birds circle Starucca Valley as rattlesnakes flee flames. Etain rain begins, aiding to quell fires.
The New York World notes Greeley unlikely to win any October election states in Pennsylvania Indiana and Ohio. In related news Greeley clubs plan a mass meeting at Cooper Institute on June 3 with stands on boatside and a torchlight procession. Gold closed at 1.14 percent.
Meannrs May 24 report the Priors Point steamer A. J. White hit a heavy storm two miles above Helena. Starboard guard submerged six feet. cotton bales floated away. A deck hand drowned after being washed overboard. crew abandoned ship in a yawl and returned safely. Vicksburg also struck the storm losing chimneys.
A blaze in Haysville Ashland County Ohio destroyed 26 to 30 houses this morning. The fire started in a drug store and caused property losses estimated from 30000 to 50000 dollars.
DesMoines May 24 reports Iowa corn planting is only about half done with persistent cool weather. The season is a month later than last year and much seed rotted in wet ground requiring replanting. Small grain crop stands in good condition despite these concerns.
London reports the steamship Baltimore collided with an unknown vessel on Wednesday night and ran aground off Hastings. The ship is now afloat after repairs, water pumped out, and a bow hole stopped. Much of the cargo remains in the hull, with progress toward Bremen expected tomorrow.
