In Bladensburg Maryland on December 27 Sheriff Darnall shot Lewis Becket a colored man during an arrest attempt prompted by warrants for disorderly conduct. Becket resisted as a disorderly crowd pressed the sheriff and Becket was wounded in the side.
The USS Enterprise returned to New London after locating remnants of an abandoned timber raft at 39 33 N 68 10 W, about 360 miles SE of Sandy Hook. Commander McValla reports insufficient raft for towing. logs will drift away. The raft owner blames the Miranda and plans new rafts to tow when weather allows.
President Cleveland and five cabinet members with Private Secretary Lamont arrived in Jersey City at 9 50 PM en route to Albany for the funeral of ex Secretary of the Treasury Daniel Manning. The party rode in the Pullman Soudan car attached to the West Shore train delayed to await their arrival. County Democracy lauded Manning as a citizen whose life added lustre to American citizenship and mourned his loss.
LB Rouss of New York fed about one thousand people at a Sarah Zane Fire Company dinner in the Winchester courthouse. Rouss's check accompanied a letter offering a simple wish for all attendees to enjoy a good dinner regardless of race or politics. The event drew several hundred boys who collected a notable sum of money from him.
Charley Brown a colored 18 year old resident of New Market was shot on the Baltimore pike by Harry Barnes a telegraph lineman. Barnes says Brown threw a stone striking him in the eye and he fired two shots wounding Brown in the hip. Barnes is described as respectable, unmarried and about 28.
Ernest B. Mayer and Henry Rohr dry goods and novelty firm Bon Marche plan an assignment today. Liabilities about 40000 dollars, with roughly half owed to New York merchants. Assets not known.
Edward H. Kendricks, 52, a longtime telegraph operator with Western Union, died after leaping from the Sixth Street Bridge in PirrsperG, Pennsylvania, in a despondent act. He had served the company over 25 years.
Rockville Missouri December arrest reports say Sheriff White with Barnesville deputy Howard White captured Charles Neill, linked with brother Dick, in an assault on the sheriff Saturday evening while traveling from Washington to Rockville.
The steamer Rhaetia arrived from Hamburg with 206 steerage passengers. Three passengers contracted small pox. the vessel was fumigated and the patients held at quarantine. The remaining passengers may land tomorrow.
