A Christmas season editorial laments 1883 drawing to a close with sorrowful memories and vacant chairs. It urges charity toward the poor, peace on earth, and a renewed resolve to begin 1889 with a clean slate and generous deeds.
Sheriff John G. Crane his wife and ten year old son Walter were riding near Annapolis when the horse balked and the carriage plunged from a thirty foot bluff on the United States government farm. Mrs Crane jumped free the horse fell the vehicle rolled over the bluff. Crane hung from roots and was seriously injured while Walter escaped with minor injuries. The horse died and the carriage sustained heavy damage with $250 loss.
A dynamite and powder magazine at Mt Pleasant Ohio belonging to the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad exploded yesterday afternoon their report heard 40 miles away in Washington Pennsylvania and Moundsville West Virginia. No full details yet but rumors say considerable property damage and loss of life. Also included are schedules for semi monthly excursions to California Colorado and Pacific Coast points via multiple railroads with a December 11 departure from Philadelphia and other cities and reservations through the Baltimore and Ohio railroad.
William E. Harding and Mr. Lewis B. Allen reported John L. Sullivan forfeited 5000 for Kilrain. Kilrain accepted with forty eight hours notice to arrange articles. Backers and principals to meet soon to set preliminaries for a 10000 a side championship bout.

Baltimore salesman Frank Codling dies after drinking, leaving a widow and three children. burial arrangements move to Baltimore.
A Wheeling dispatch reports Mayor Sea bright received a red ink letter signed White Caps threatening him with summary punishment if he did not reform. The letter, claiming a forty man organization, targets the mayor whose conduct is said to be above reproach and also mentions a threatening note to a local newspaper man.
Cards announce the marriage this evening of Miss Mamie Van Orsdale and Mr Robert Lewis in Wilmington North Carolina at the aunt Mrs Hewitt's Davidson street residence. Also advertised is a sale of umbrellas with gold and silver handles at Vogel Debler 29 Baltimore street.

A Philadelphia dispatch says Miss Mary Garrett led the removal of Samuel Spencer as B and O president. She opposed his policy, blocked a Drexel Morgan loan, and even supplied millions of her own funds to the road while Drexel Morgan was repaid. Mayer succeeds Spencer amid Garrett influence.
In Gar rett county and Cumberland discussion centers on who will succeed Col. E H Wardwell of the Maryland National Guard Second Battalion. Capt George A Pearce is seen as likely successor. others named include Capt David W Sloan Col J W Avirett Capt R H Gordon Capt Neil Woodrow and more. The Times urges Pearce election in January citing merit and adjutant service. The piece also includes a health ad for Bosehee's German Syrup warning of pneumonia and consumption risks.
