Aveusta Maine December 15 Governor Joseph Robinson Bodwell died this morning after a prolonged illness that fluctuated between hopeful and hopeless. Born in Methuen Massachusetts he worked as a farmer and shoemaker before founding the Bodwell Granite company and entering politics. He served as Maine governor starting in 1886 as a Republican.
Rockville Missouri December 16. Collector of Internal Revenue Joseph K. Roberts a member of the Blain Brady damage suit council has been in Rockville for days and lies ill at Montgomery House with a stomach complaint. Dr Scott of Upper Marlboro reports the patient is better and not in danger.
Annapolis Maryland December 16 Hon William Pinkney White qualified yesterday before Governor Lloyd. Attendees included J A L McClure Adjutant General Howard A H Robertson and W H Whyte. Governor Whyte's grandfather William Pinkney was attorney general in 1805 and U S senator. Whyte held both offices.
A serious accident near Sir Joan's Bay after dusk on Wednesday left Mrs. John Michael wounded in the back by a buckshot fired from John Moss’s gun. Doctors say recovery is unlikely, and the incident occurred within a mile of the area.
Baltimore reports a rumor that Fred Talbott aims to head the Chesapeake and Ohio canal and met Senator Gorman, but both deny any plan. Talbott is said to be only visiting for relaxation with no objective.
Upper Marinero reports that Dr. Frederick Lasseer, former Republican House candidate in Prince George s county, will contest Pinkney A. Scaggs seat claiming Scaggs served as postmaster at the time of his election.
Wilkesbarre pa December 16 Grand Master Workman Powderly of the Knights of Labor was reported dying last night but his physician said there is no truth in the report and that he was doing nicely and steadily improving.
Martinspore West Virginia December 16. Cornelius Harley about 70 years old was run over and killed by a locomotive in the Baltimore and Ohio yards in this city last night. He had worked for the company more than thirty years.
The Times reports either the Baltimore and Ohio or the Western Maryland Railroad may acquire Ca toctin furnaces long run by the Kunkle family in Frepenick county. A stage coach was robbed near Little Rock Arkansas with six hundred dollars and two gold watches taken. The driver was forced to stop after the robbers fired a horse. The body of Geo Dougherty, a farmer, was found near Paducah Kentucky, with five hundred in his possession last seen. Thomas G Woolfolk was convicted in Macon Georgia of murdering nine relatives and sentenced to hang.
