Detroit August 31 A balloon ascent by a team of aeronauts ends in tragedy as George Hogan, an experienced balloonist, loses his grip during a midair trapeze act at about 1000 feet. He crashes onto a plank sidewalk before a crowd of about 20,000, dying from massive injuries. Hogan was brother to the aeronaut missing last year and lived in Jackson, Michigan.
The presidential party reached Cape May on Saturday and the president stayed indoors due to disagreeable weather. Dinners with the Boyd couple occurred, guests Cale have left for Indianapolis, and Harrison and companions plan trips to New York. Private Secretary Halford remains until Wednesday before accompanying the president to Washington. The family plans to close the seashore cottage on September 10.
George Beard a 21 year old man has been bedridden for three months near Muskegon, unconscious for seven weeks and only senses feeling. He reacts to touch by raising an arm and turns his head when guided. Doctors say nourishment is given through a mouth opening after removing four teeth to allow feeding.
In Santa Clara a nineteen round eight ounce glove fight between George Dixon of Streator Illinois and Albert Corill a Mexican youth ended with Dixon declared winner after one hour sixteen minutes. Referee William A Pharis halted the bout when Corill failed to answer the bell. Both men sustained facial bruises and the fight was marked by slugging and flags flying from their props during the lengthy engagement.
The bi carbonate works of the Pennsylvania Salt Company’s large Natrona plant were destroyed by fire between five and six o’clock yesterday morning. Other departments were saved by hard work, but the loss will reach about $100 000.

A two year old girl, daughter of George Urben of 1406 Mulberry alley, fell forty five feet from a third story window on Penn avenue. She landed on a hay heap, rolled to the cellar, and was rescued by Captain Brody. She was soon restored after being treated by Dr. Heiber, with only bruises and a minor scalp wound.
Hon. G. W. Scofield former judge of the United States Court of Claims died at 3 o clock yesterday morning from heart trouble after a period of declining health. He suffered a paralytic stroke Thursday but remained conscious and able to recognize family until the end. Funeral set for Tuesday at 2 30 p m.
Erie Pa Aug 31 Congressman W L Scott is rapidly sinking Dr Pepper of Philadelphia arrived in Erie Saturday and after consultation with other physicians decided to move Mr Scott to Newport if his life is to be saved He will be removed this afternoon in the private car of President Newell of the Lake Shore railroad Mr Scott has grown steadily worse for two weeks and has given up hope of recovery.
In Seattle on August 31 Justice Hanford ruled that most sections of the Sept 13 1888 act remain in force though the China treaty was never ratified. Chinamen may appeal commissioner's rulings and be tried by district judges. This marks the first decision on the law with ten Chinamen already securing trials and discharges.
Fire last night in the ore frame building occupied by A. Lusk & Co and the California Automatic Cannon company caused a total loss of 100,000 dollars. The Automatic company suffered 70,000 dollars in machinery and stock with 87,000 dollars insured. A. Lusk & Co. faced 20,000 dollars in machinery and stock loss, fully insured. The blaze started from a smoke stack.
In Georgetown Kentucky Aug 81 armed men patrol streets after a mob of African Americans avenge a lynching by burning a tobacco barn and a judge's cottage and dwelling. The alleged killer Squire Kendall and his four sons are guarded in the county jail amid high excitement.

Columsus Ohio August 31 James Anderson the noted robber and escapee from Cincinnati jail was captured in Cleveland after a reunion with his wife and son. Detective Pat Kelley of Columbus arrested him as Cincinnati detectives followed. Anderson and his companion George Duncan were returned to Cincinnati. Anderson suffered a thigh wound from the Cincinnati confrontation and his hip ailment persists.
The Empress of Japan arrived at Vancouver with 46 cabin passengers 240 steerage and 3000 tons of cargo after leaving Hong Kong August 11. She carries 36 mail sacks dispatched to New York and includes Bishop Bickerstath of China among the passengers. The German steamer Ellen Rickmers ran aground near Keel by a typhoon the night before departure.
In Cleveland Ohio on August 31 Judge Macmath on behalf of Rev Howard MacQueary moved to strike out all but six months suspension or reopen the case. He argues the double sentence violates canonical law. The six months ends next month and he hopes to preach again or gain a new trial, else civil action.
The One-Year Mutual Benefit association of Eryria Ohio failed to meet its obligations. Organized last January with 125 local members and several lodges statewide, it promised $100 after one year from a $40 expenditure. Members are offered 50 cents on the dollar.
James Roberts, Columbus Grove bank robber and murderer, remains jailed in Ottawa and pretends to be insane. He has refused meals, acted queerly, and been seen greasing boots with butter after doctors said he is sane. Cashier Maple confirmed Roberts shot him, declaring the case closed.

Miss Gertie Allgner aged 23 residing with Andrew Mittower Ninth and Elm streets tried to hasten a slow fire by pouring coal oil on it. A flash ignited her clothing causing severe burns across the head face breast and arms. Neighbors and her host extinguished the flames and she was taken to St Joseph's hospital.
