Governor race shows Jacob independent leads in first district by about 1380, second district 2260 for J E Ol, third district 2600 for Camden. overall state majority for Jacob unlikely to exceed 1000. Constitution ratification favored by Republicans but final margin unclear.
A Ripley county murder case ends with a mob execution after the arrested suspect was taken from jail and shot by twenty armed men. A Little Rock dispatch reports a joint Democratic Liberal and Reform Republican ticket naming Brooks for Governor and several other state officers, with criticism of Jim Convedidouts’ actions among Democrats.
The Rev. James Roosselt Bailey, Catholic Bishop of Newark, received from Pope Pius a bull appointing him Archbishop of Baltimore to succeed Archbishop Spaulding. Dated July 50th and sealed with St. Peter’s fisherman's seal, the document was announced in Newark.
In a Union Market restaurant, Thomas Dowling and John McCormick quarreled with waiter Joshua Saunders who fired six shots. McCormick suffered a skull wound and Dowling an eye wound with brain involvement. both mortally wounded. The waiter was arrested amid a heat wave with more sunstroke reports.
At Tacony last night a farm wagon was struck by a New York Railroad train killing Robert Dean and his two ten year old grandchildren Ellis Frieberg and Geo Mullock. Miss Snyder died from injuries after a hip fracture and head wound. Coachman Porter survived initial impact but died later. A follow up crash occurred when a Reading Road bridge collapsed releasing coal oil cars igniting a wider fire. Total losses estimated at 250000 with no injuries from the second crash.
Wastrxcrox reports a Wednesday forecast with northerly and northwesterly winds and generally clear weather for New England and the Middle States, while conditions will be mainly cloudy across the Southern States east of the Mississippi.
