No Draft For January Cuts Expect 1973 Totals
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird said no one would be drafted in January and the six month 1973 total would be under 10 000, bringing fiscal year 1973 drafts to about 50 000. He predicted sufficient volunteer enlistments after June 30 but warned a special draft could be needed if enlistment bonuses for National Guard and reserves are not approved. The Guard and reserves stand about 45 000 short of authorized strength.
