Administration Hopes To End Draft By 1973
The administration aims to end the military draft by mid 1972 but the Selective Service System will keep registering and classifying young men after that time. Director Curtis W. Tarr told a Senate subcommittee that a standby system is needed for emergency calls, with continued registration, lotteries, classification, and some pre induction exams. The standby authority runs under the Draft Extension Law expiring June 30, 1973, and Congress should fund it. In an emergency, mobilization could begin within a month if pre induction exams stay in place.
